From a nutrition perspective, there are many perks to sipping a veggie-packed green smoothie versus a purely fruit-based one. Dont get us wrong: Its not that fruit is bad but fruit does contain more calories and sugar than vegetables, says Natalie Allen, RD, an instructor of biomedical sciences at Missouri State University in Springfield and the team dietitian for Missouri State athletes.

On average, vegetables have 25 calories per cup, while fruit has 60 calories per cup, she says. Plus, Allen says the typical green smoothie likely provides at least one serving of vegetables, which most people need more of in their diet. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that adult women take in between 2 and 2½ cups of vegetables per day, while men should have 2½ to 3 cups per day, depending on their age. Only about 10 percent of Americans meet that recommendation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The good news is its easy to become part of that 10 percent if youre not already. You can get nearly halfway to your daily veggie goal by starting your day with a green smoothie.

To keep things light, Allen suggests adding protein, such as skim milk, yogurt, or protein powder to the smoothie. The protein will provide satiety and help with appetite control, she says.

High Calorie Offending Smoothie Ingredients Include:

    • Nut butter. I love to add nut butters to my smoothies, but measuring it and limiting it is essential to keeping calories down.
    • Too much fruit. While the whole point is to get your fruit servings for the day, too much fruit is unnecessary. Keep fruit to 1 cup or less in your smoothie.
    • Fruit juices. Every smoothie needs a liquid, but be careful what you add. Juice can add 120 calories or more to your smoothie as opposed to water.
    • Milk and creams. Adding skim milk is a great choice, but whole milk or cream could double your calories.
    • Sugar, honey, or high calorie sweeteners. Theres a reason smoothies from a smoothie restaurant are so high in calories, and its SUGAR! Yes. I agree. They taste amazing. But, the trade off might not be worth it.
    • High fat yogurts. Including a cream yogurt makes a delicious fruit smoothie, but choose nonfat yogurt and save half the calories. Choose nonfat Greek yogurt and boost the protein in your shake.
    • Coconut, avocado, or seeds like chia seeds. There are whole food, healthy, high fat ingredients like avocados, seeds, or coconut. These are delicious and healthy for you. But they are also high in calories. Simply weigh and measure before you dump these high calorie whole food into a smoothie. Chances are, you will be adding ingredients that you cant even taste. Is it worth it to over do it? Probably not.

Which Items Should I Include In My Smoothie

I suggest you structure your smoothie so that you include ingredients that will fill you up and also meet all your nutritional needs.

These are the ingredients I suggest you include in every smoothie:

    • Fruit for nutrients and sweet taste.
    • Leafy Greens for nutrients such as calcium and magnesium without adding too many calories.
    • Liquid Base to turn these ingredients into a blended drink.
    • Protein such as nuts, seeds or legumes to fill you up and give you a great source of protein and essential healthy fats. Legumes are a better choice than nuts or seeds because they are much lower in fat and contain a lot more nutrients. They make the smoothie creamy. You cant taste them at all, believe me.
    • Grains such as oats help to fill you up and provide extra calories and protein.
    • Sweeteners are a good option if you have a sweet tooth.
    • Extras to provide extra taste and nutrition if you need it.

    Best Blenders For Smoothies

When making a smoothie recipe at home there are a few ways you can blend it together. Here are the pros and cons of each method:

    • High-speed individual blender such as aNutribullet. This option makes for super easy clean-up, but is best for just 1-2 servings.
    • Large high-speed blender such as aVitamix. Best for making a large batch, but calls for more cleanup.
    • 6 cup+ food processor such as a Cuisinart Food Processor. A last resort since it does not blend up the smoothie as easily, but it will get the job done.

If youre aware of my ethos you know that Im all about being as healthy as I can by spending as little time in the kitchen as possible.

Thats why I make Green Thickies which are complete meal smoothies. These allow me to make meals by only spending 2 minutes a day in the kitchen.

The great thing about Green Thickies are that they fill you up from one meal to the next so you dont end up needing any snacks.

So usually Im not a fan of low calorie shakes for one reason

It is often too much effort to make green smoothie snacks that are low in calories because youll still need to make proper meals alongside them.

This means more time in the kitchen.

But I do understand that not everybody wants to drink a smoothie as a meal. Some people do actually have more time to prepare a sit down meal, and sit down and enjoy it.

And for those people I still encourage them to have at least one green drink a day.

So if thats you and you prefer sit down meals, then you will love these low calorie green smoothies that you can use as snacks in between meals, or with your meals.
