Ever since my boys were little, they would drop everything and come running when theyd hear me fire up the blender. It doesnt matter if its my blueberry banana, tropical or kale smoothie, they love them all.

As theyve gotten older, Ive tried to incorporate protein into their smoothies to make them more satisfying, and this Chocolate Banana Protein Smoothie has become a fast favorite.

Its important to me to use quality ingredients to create nutritious smoothies for my family, so on a recent trip to my local Safeway store, I picked up some Open Nature® Plant Based Chocolate Protein Powder and Creamy Maple Almond Butter, as well as O Organics® Original Unsweetened Almond Milk.

I purchase both O Organics and Open Nature brands regularly because I like to eat plant-based whenever possible. Each brand has extensive lines of high quality, better for you plant-based products that are budget-friendly, high in protein, and are a great alternative to meat without sacrificing quality and flavor.

O Organics® offers USDA-certified organic plant-based products, and Open Nature® offers minimally processed plant-based products free from 110 food additives.

Can You Taste The Cauliflower In The Smoothie

People are always a bit surprised when I mention that I like make cauliflower smoothies. But, friends, it seriously adds to the creaminess of a smoothie and the cauliflower flavor disappears into the banana and chocolatey goodness.

If you are super iffy about this whole cauliflower in smoothie thing, then go slow! Maybe only add 1/2 cup of the riced cauliflower and see how you like it. Then work your way up!

Oh! And I personally like to use frozen cauliflower to help give the smoothie a frosty milkshake vibe.

Do you cook the cauliflower before freezing?

This is a personal choice and requires you to reflect a bit on your history with cauliflower. Like broccoli, Cauliflower is a cruciferous veggie. Cruciferous vegetables contains complex sugars that some people find hard to digest when eaten raw.

So, if you get belly issues right after eating raw cauliflower, then lightly steaming it prior to freezing it for this smoothie is probably idea for you.

    Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Shake

    Super Healthy Chocolate Banana Smoothie!

How could this not be good though? It has three of the best flavors, banana, peanut butter and chocolate all together in one decadent morning treat.

Note that the sweetness of this smoothie comes from the ripeness of the bananas so be sure to use some that are well ripened. If you still would like it a little bit sweeter you could add in a little honey or cut back a touch on the cocoa powder.

This is one creamy, protein rich smoothie you are going to love!

This Chocolate Banana Smoothie is pretty much my life right now.

It is like a chocolate milkshake meets breakfast meets the most refreshing afternoon snack on a busy day and even dessert when you just need a little something extra after dinner. Its like chocolate-gone-bananas in a healthy, no refined sugar added, super easy to make, gluten free kind of way. So frothy and smooth and icy, icy cold.

A frozen banana is an absolute must here. Nothing makes a thick and creamy smoothie like a frozen banana.

And the ice. Normally, I am not overly crazy about adding ice to my smoothies. I dont know why but I almost always pass on the ice except for now. The ice in the chocolate banana smoothie thickens and gives an incredible frothy type-of thing. Do it.

Want to add some pizazz to your chocolate banana smoothie? Because some days we need a little extra pizazz Add some frozen berries, a scoop of your favourite protein powder or even blend in some chocolate chips for extra chocolate and texture.

And you better make your own because I am not sharing a single drop!

    • Prep Time:5 minutes
    • 3/4 cup milk
    • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
    • 12 teaspoons honey
    • 36 ice cubes
    • 1 large frozen banana

Tips For Making Almond Milk Smoothies

Although I love making this as a banana almond butter smoothie, you could easily substitute the almond butter for peanut butter, if desired. The almond milk is mild enough in flavor that it wouldnt compete too much with another type of nut butter.

For a thinner smoothie, add more almond milk to the mixture. And for a thicker texture, add less almond milk .

If you want to keep this banana almond milk smoothie recipe refined sugar-free, double check that youre using unsweetened cocoa powder. Sometimes sugar gets snuck into cocoa powder, so read the ingredients list to be safe.

Lastly, this banana almond butter smoothie recipe serves four people. If you have leftovers, pour them into jars and freeze them. When youre ready to eat the frozen pre-made smoothie, set it on the counter to thaw for a few minutes until its drinkable.

Chop Banana And Measure Remaining Ingredients

Before you freeze your bananas, cut them up into chunks so theyre easy to toss into blended beverages with no further prep required.

If you only have whole frozen bananas, you can still peel and chop them while theyre frozen. But please be careful when cutting frozen ingredients. Remove the peel from the frozen banana and chop into chunks, about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long.

Measure out all of the remaining ingredients as listed in the ingredients list. Make sure to set out the ingredients in the order listed, to make assembling the recipe easy.

    Tips For Making This Smoothie

    Chocolate Banana Smoothie

Here are a few tips to get a perfect smoothie every time:

    • Freeze bananas ahead of time. Once I have ripe bananas, I like to cut them into chunks and store them in the freezer. By using frozen bananas, you don’t have to use any ice in the smoothie. I love to always have bananas in my freezer so that I can make a smoothie whenever the craving hits.
    • Use whatever milk you prefer. I personally love to make this smoothie with almond milk or oat milk, but you can use whatever milk you prefer. Try out a few different options and see what you like best!
    • Add in honey or maple syrup to sweeten the smoothie if desired. I think the bananas add enough sweetness by themselves, but you can absolutely add in a sweetener like honey or maple syrup to enhance the flavor of the smoothie.

This getting older business is rough, isnt it? Im only beginning to notice the effects. My smile lines seem just a little deeper. Silver strands are infiltrating my dark hair. Hangovers hurt more than they used to. Im even shopping for comfortable shoes .

On the upside, Im getting wiser, too. Im not taking failed relationships quite so personally, because most arent meant to be. If a job doesnt suit me, Ill find a better one. If a friend makes me feel small, out she goes! Its never easy, but every time I take a leap toward the brighter side, Im better for it.

Take this smoothie. I used to sip on a similar smoothie at a raw, vegan restaurant where I worked for a brief time. I waited tables on the weekends just to learn from the chefs, and I learned a lot about food presentation and vegetable preparation. It wasnt a happy place, though, so I was glad to leave once I had learned enough.

I got this smoothie out of the deal, too. Its rich and creamy, gently spiced with cinnamon and cayenne pepper , and naturally sweetened with ripe bananas. Its a nutritionally redeeming, grown-up chocolate frostymy favorite frozen summer treat.

    • Optional sweetener: ½ teaspoon maple syrup or honey

The other day I visited a popular chain restaurant for a smoothie. The menu advertised fresh fruit smoothies, so I assumed that the drink contained exactly what it alleged fresh fruit. Before I placed my smoothie order, I boldly inquired about the exact contents of the smoothie.

The server cordially hauled out an industrial-size container of scarlet goop that resembled pureed strawberries. She politely explained that ice is added to the liquid then blended. My real food alarms resounded as I silently wondered two points:
