  • I used greek yogurt in this recipe, but it can easily be made vegan just by replacing the yogurt with a vegan yogurt option!
  • You can thicken or thin out this smoothie bowl simply by adjusting the amount of yogurt. More yogurt will thin it out, less will thicken it!

Peanut Butter Bliss Acai Bowl

serves 2-3, depending on how many toppings are added

Add the following to a blender:

  • 1 package frozen acai berry packet, 100 grams
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup chocolate almond milk
  • 1 small frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries

Top each bowl with the following:

  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • A handful of vanilla almond granola, or a similar store-bought or homemade granola
  • 1/2 of 1 banana, very thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
serves 2-3, depending on how many toppings are added

Half of the fun of the smoothie bowl is layering on the toppings! Here are some ideas to up your topping game:

  • Granola – any flavor is great! I especially love vanilla or peanut butter.
  • Fresh fruit: sliced banana, berries, kiwi, mango, etc.
  • Frozen fruit: frozen berries are great!
  • Freeze dried fruit: a new find for me, freeze dried fruit adds amazing crunch to smoothie bowls! Freeze dried berries, banana, pineapple, and mango, are favorites. I usually purchase them at Trader Joe’s or online.

Where To Find Acai

Currently, you wont find fresh acai berries at the store like you will blueberries. Acai is actually one of the lowest-sugar fruits, and it spoils too quickly to transport from the Amazonian rainforest to our grocery stores. But, its now much easier to find acai in other forms, like freeze-dried acai powder or frozen acai purée, which is what I used to make this blueberry acai smoothie!

    How To Make An Aai Smoothie

    Step 1: Add all your chosen ingredients to a blender. I recommend not using ice in açai smoothies, because the puree is very tart and youll want the sweetness of the mangos or bananas to come through. Use frozen fruit to make a thick and cold smoothie.

    Step 2: Process your fruit and non dairy milks in a blender, until thick and creamy. Add additional almond milk to thin to the desired consistency, if necessary.

    Additionally, if your bowl isnt thick enough, you can add in more frozen fruit to change the consistency. Make sure you serve your bowl right away since most of the ingredients are frozen. You dont want them to melt.

    To achieve the thickest smoothie bowl:

    • Use as many frozen ingredients as possible they help build the volume of the bowls.
    • Use a high speed blender it really makes a difference in the ability to get all of the ingredients fully incorporated and blended and build viscosity while blending.
    • Use as few liquid ingredients as possible as these will water down the mixture.

    Where To Buy Aai

    Both frozen acai and acai powder are becoming more popular at large chain grocery stores. Whole foods and Trader Joes now sell frozen in their freezer section.

    You can also find acai at almost all health food stores in the freezer section in the superfood section. Acai is also available at some shops online and can be easily ordered and shipped to your home.

    Acai Packets Vs Acai Powder:

    In the past, I used acai powder but really dont like it as much as the frozen acai packets. The powder just has a rather bitter taste and I dont prefer it. Luckily, Ive been seeing the frozen packets a lot lately at some of the stores that I frequent the most including Trader Joes and Publix. The frozen packets also result in a much thicker and creamier smoothie which I prefer.

    If using the powder, follow the instructions on the packet for making 1 smoothie serving. Theyre all a little different.

    I use one packet per smoothie in this recipe but Ive seen others that call for just half of a packet if you want to make them go slower OR if you prefer a slightly lighter acai flavor.

    Acai Smoothie Bowl Variations

    • Sub protein powder for the Greek yogurt, substitute a scoop of your favorite protein powder. . Or, add protein powder as an addition if you like the Greek yogurt and the tang plus health benefits it provides.
    • Omit the banana while bananas are one of the keys to a really thick smoothie bowl consistency, you can certainly omit the banana if your body does not run as efficiently with a lot of sugar .
    • Add coconut butter an addition of a scoop of coconut butter would be really tasty for an extra tropical feel, plus healthy fats.
    • Use acai powder cant find frozen acai packs? Use acai powder instead, but be sure to add a cup of water or milk to your smoothie bowl to help smooth out the ingredients. Youll also want to prioritize using as many frozen ingredients as possible to help maintain the thickness of the bowl.

    The Aai Bowl Ingredients

    • Acai puree: I used frozen unsweetened acai puree from a local grocery store. I like to get the ones in large packs, though you can also get pellets in some supermarkets. It may also be available from your local health food store or online.
    • Banana: you need frozen banana I recommend slicing it and freezing it the day before, so its ready.
    • Coconut water: I love using coconut water. However, if youd prefer a slightly creamier açai bowl, you could use milk instead such as almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk.
    • Sweetener: this easy acai bowl recipe is naturally sweet already, thanks to the banana and acai berry puree. However, if you have a sweet tooth, feel free to add an extra drizzle of maple syrup or honey .

    Peanut Butter Acai Bowl Recipe

    This Peanut Butter Apple Acai Bowl recipe uses apple juice instead of milk and omits the honey because apple juice is already sweet. Its blended with two tablespoons peanut butter for an extra creamy nutty yum and cocoa powder for an added depth of yum.

    The acai bowl is then topped with bananas, strawberries, tart Granny Smith apples, granola, chia seeds and mini dark chocolate chips. I LOVE both the apple juice and the peanut butter in this recipe and actually add peanut butter to all of my acai bowls.

    Homemade Acai Bowl Recipe

    For best results, I recommend that you use a high-speed blender. This is the one I own and love.

  • Add all ingredients to the bowl of a large blender. Start with the liquids- yogurt and milk first, followed by the spinach, frozen fruit, banana, and chia seeds .
  • Process until the frozen mango and peaches are fully blended and the spinach is completely processed.
  • And more milk or yogurt as needed.
  • Leftovers will keep for about two days when stored in the refrigerator. There will be some natural separation, simply shake well before drinking.

    With this said, its best to enjoy smoothies right away. Theyre never as cold, icy, or as thick after a day or so hanging out in the refrig.

    We all have different tastes, and different nutritional needs. Here are some ideas for modifying this smoothie to make it perfect for you!

    Mix up the Fruit: I recommend having 1 sweet fruit in here, so if mango isnt your thing, try banana. Blueberries are awesome in here, but Ive also made this with frozen raspberries and frozen strawberries. Any frozen berries work here!

    Add Protein: I use BioChem Whey protein isolate. Its from grass-fed dairy, tastes great, and doesnt have any other ingredients. It gives smoothies an extra creamy and light texture, so I love adding it to smoothies.

    Substitute your favorite protein powder, or try one of these options:

    • 1-2 tablespoons chia, hemp or flax seeds
    • 1/3 cup Greek yogurt
    • Soy or hemp milk to replace the almond milk

    Add more Healthy Fats: Need more calories in your smoothie? For additional healthy fats, add 1 tablespoon of nut butter, coconut oil, MCT oil, or 1/4 of an avocado into your acai smoothie.
