Does The Fruit Need To Be Frozen In A Fruit Smoothie

How to make healthy smoothies with frozen fruit (3 recipes!)

If you want to make a frozen fruit smoothie and dont have any frozen fruit on hand, add ice to your mixture. If you dont add frozen fruit or ice, your smoothie wont be thick and frosty. If you dont mind this, then youll be fine to continue. I highly recommend using frozen fruit because it tends to blend better than straight ice. Its not pleasant to bite down on chunks of ice in a smoothie!

This fruit smoothie recipe is so easy that we make them most days during the hot weather. You wont hear me complaining. Theyre a lot healthier than ice cream and if making them keeps the want for ice cream at bay, Im all for it!

Defrosting In The Refrigerator

The frozen fruits can be defrosted in the refrigerator. This is a lengthy process but it works. Typically it takes 6 to 8 hours. If youre in hurry then you shouldnt follow this. If you have time then its okay.

Its better to take only the amount of frozen fruits you need to use. The thawed fruits shouldnt be refrozen. So try not to take an excessive amount of fruits. Otherwise, the leftover fruits will be wasted.

Put the fruits in a bowl or on a plate to avoid dripping. Then keep them in the refrigerator.

Leave the fruits inside the refrigerator for 6 to 8 hours per pound.

Turn the package or fruits every hour to accelerate the process. If you dont do this the fruits may not thaw equally. Moreover, it will take more time.

Note: Keep the temperature of your refrigerator at 40°F or less during the whole process.

Prepare Your Fresh Fruit

Whatever fruit you decide to use, prepare it by first washing and trimming it of any leaves or stems.

The mango is going to be peeled and the pit removed. On a cutting board, trim off the end of the fruit using a chefs knife. Cut away the peel of the mango.

Next, use your knife to remove the meaty flesh of the mango on both sides of the pit. After youve removed the flesh of the mango from the pit, cut the fruit into large chunks.

What Are The Health Benefits Of A Frozen Fruit Smoothie

Although smoothies are sweet, making it seem like theyre a treat more than a health benefit, they actually full of nutrients. A fruit smoothie contains large amounts of folate. vitamin C, and potassium. Most fruits are a great source for these nutrients and one fruit smoothie can contain up to 2-3 servings of fruit. The Greek yogurt also adds a good dose of protein, which help keep you full for longer.

Expert Tips And Tricks

  • Skip the bananas. An avocado can be substituted for a banana along with a tablespoon or two of sweetener.
  • Go for the goat yogurt. If youre slightly lactose intolerant, goats milk yogurt is a wonderful alternative that tastes very similar to cows milk yogurt.
  • Add and adjust. Start by adding a little bit of optional ingredients and then taste after each addition to make sure you still like the flavor!
  • Sweeten it last. Youd be surprised how sweet fruit can be! Wait until the end to stir in any additional sweeteners.
  • Pay attention to the blade. You want to add your softer ingredients closer to the blade and the harder ingredients further away from the blade for easier blending.

How To Make A Smoothie With Frozen Fruit

To make your frozen fruit smoothie, youll need just three simple ingredients.

  • Milk. You need this liquid to be able to help the frozen fruit blend. You can use whatever kind of milk you prefer- dairy or non-dairy.
  • Yogurt. This makes the smoothie creamy and also adds a probiotic boost! Again, you can use whatever kind of yogurt you enjoy. I love using my easy homemade yogurt!
  • Frozen fruit. As Ive already said, this is what makes the smoothie delightfully thick. And the flavor combinations are endless!

Once you have your ingredients, add the milk and yogurt to the blender. Adding these easy-to-blend foods first will help make it easier for the blender to do its job.

Add your fruit and blend!

If you have a high powered blender, there should be no problems. But if you are using a regular blender, you may notice that it is struggling to work.

If that is the case, stop! You dont want to blow up the motor.

You can either add more milk/yogurt to make the smoothie easier to blend or you can just wait for 10 minutes or so and allow the fruit to soften a bit.

How To Make A Smoothie

A smoothie is so much more than blended fruit. It’s an art with all of its different elements blending perfectly together. Just in case these 29 smoothies aren’t enough, here is our guide to making the perfect smoothie.

Pick your fruit.

We chose strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and bananas to be our base, but any combo of fruit is great. Make a tropical smoothie of pineapple, mango, and banana or add blueberry and peach to switch it up a bit for a summer twist. Aim for about 3 cups of fruit.

Fresh or frozen fruit?

For smoothies, frozen fruit is best. It blends up thicker than fresh fruit and gives you a really cold smoothie to enjoy after blending. If you don’t have frozen fruit, freeze your fresh fruit for 30 minutes before blending or add about 1 cup of ice and blend until smooth!

Add a thickener.

We use unsweetened Greek yogurt in our smoothie, but peanut butter, almond butter, or vanilla yogurt are all great options. Traditionally about 1/2 cup is ideal. If you prefer thinner smoothies, you can either lessen the amount of thickener or skip it all together.

Choose a liquid.

Almond milk is great for the added nutty flavor, but coconut milk pairs well with a tropical smoothie and gives a richer, creamier flavor. Whole milk or fruit juice also work well. 1 1/4 cup of liquid makes the perfect consistency for our preference. If you skipped the thickener, use less liquid as well.

Throw some add-ins in.

  • frozen blackberries, plus more for garnish

Yogurt Berry Smoothie Ingredients

One thing I love about smoothies is that you can easily mix and match ingredients based on what you have on hand. However, they can start to all taste the same if you stick to the same old ingredients. This Berry Yogurt Smoothie is made with no orange juice which gives it a fresh flavor that kids will love, even if theyve already have a couple of smoothies this week.

Heres what you need for this Triple Berry Smoothie with Yogurt

  • Frozen berries Pick your favorite blend of flavors. Mine is strawberry, raspberry, bluebbery!
  • Milk or water This yogurt smoothie does need a little bit of extra liquid, but if youre going for a dairy-free berry smoothie you can easily sub the milk out and use water because youll still have the creaminess of the Greek yogurt as your smoothie base.
  • Greek yogurt This smoothie add-in is high in protein and provides the perfect creamy texture to your berry smoothie.
  • Banana I always keep mine frozen so they stay good long enough for smoothies, but any banana will add just the right amount of flavor balance to this recipe.
  • Spinach While this ingredient is optional, its a great way to skyrocket the nutritional value of this berry yogurt smoothie.

Tips For The Best Fruit Smoothie

Frozen Fruit Smoothies

The frozen fruit in this easy smoothie recipe can be substituted with fresh fruit, if desired. Youll need to add a handful of ice, though. If berries are in season, you can buy them fresh and freeze them the night before!

Also, feel free to switch out the other ingredients as you see fit. Play around with the yogurt flavor you use, or use plain yogurt and sweeten with a little honey or maple syrup instead.

And any non-dairy milk from Silk would pair nicely with the flavors of this smoothie, so dont feel like you have to limit yourself to cashew milk.

If you want to create your own smoothie recipes, heres how you can do it.

If you want to avoid the five major mistakes people make when making smoothies, check out this article: How Long Do Smoothies Last?

1. Start with a Liquid Base

When were making frozen fruit smoothies, we want to start with a base. Its best to always have some liquid in our smoothies. One serving usually needs about ½ 1 cup of liquid. Good options are:

  • soy milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, rice milk, etc.

The lowest calorie version is obviously plain water. Unsweetened nut milk or coconut water can also be a healthy, low-fat, and low-calorie choice.

Adding too much fruit juice may spike your blood sugar levels, so its best not to overdo it.

Also, be careful with coconut milk , as its high in fat and calories.

2. Add Some Frozen Fruits

After youve chosen your liquid base, its time to add some fruits to your smoothie. Id recommend using both frozen fruits and fresh fruits in smoothies.

If youre using too many frozen ingredients, it can make your smoothie too slushy.

If you dont use any ice or frozen fruits, your smoothie wont taste as good as it could.

Every smoothie I make will have some frozen ingredients in it.

You can completely skip the ice, and add some frozen fruits or veggies instead.

The Perfect Smoothie Ingredients

When you start to make a smoothie, there are the few things youll need. Just add something from each category below and youll have the best fruit smoothie.

I love adding something from each of the following categories. You can totally only add something from the first two categories if youd like though.

Base- The first thing you need to do is decide the liquid you want to use. You can use water, coconut water, coconut milk, regular milk, or your favorite nut milk. I almost always use almond milk when I make smoothies.

Choose Your Fruit- When I make smoothies, I try to only use frozen fruit and not fresh fruit. This will help make a thick smoothie without needing to use a handful of ice.

I almost always add frozen bananas or fresh banana slices to my smoothies, especially if Im only using water as the liquid base. Bananas will make your smoothie so creamy!

You can also add fresh or frozen veggies to make your smoothies even healthier. I love to add spinach and make it a green smoothie. Smoothies are a great way to hide leafy greens!

Add Healthy Fats- My favorite healthy fats I like to add to smoothies are peanut butter, almond butter, any nut butters, chia seeds, or flax seeds. I love all the health benefits they offer! Plus, the nut butter makes them taste so good.

Add A Sweetener- Add your favorite sweetener to your smoothie! I love to add a small amount of honey when I make my frozen fruit smoothie. Maple syrup is another great addition.

Can You Use Frozen Fruit In Smoothies

Its essential that you use enough frozen fruit in your smoothie to make it perfectly creamy. Not enough and youll end up with more of a liquid drink instead of a thick slushy consistency. You can either buy the already frozen fruit at your grocery store or freeze fresh fruit that you have cut into 1-2 inch pieces.
