Whats The Best Liquid For Making Smoothies
We like to use milk of choice. If youre a fan of coconut milk, use it. Like cows milk? Go for it. A fan of almond milk? Cool. Use whatever milk you like in your smoothiesyou cant go wrong. I just recommend you stick to unsweetened and unflavored versions. That gives you the most control over the smoothie.

What Should I Put In My Smoothie

The great thing about a fruit smoothie recipe is that the customization opportunities are virtually endless. Heres a quick run through of what I usually put in my smoothies:
- Milk or Juice: you can use dairy milk, non-dairy milk, juice, or even coconut water really any liquid goes! You can even use cold tea.
- Greek Yogurt: yogurt is a great way to kick the protein up a notch and to make a deliciously thick and creamy texture. Dairy-free, plant-based yogurt works well, too, and you can skip it if you need .
- Banana: I love to keep frozen, sliced banana on-hand. The frozen banana makes it extra creamy and acts as a natural sweetener.
- Berries/Other Fruit: any frozen fruit work great in smoothies! Pineapple, mango, and berries are our favorites. You can even use watermelon like in this refreshing Watermelon Smoothie!
- Add-Ins: you can customize it with so many different add-ins. Protein powders, nuts or seeds, oats, extracts, sweeteners, even avocado!

Layering Ingredients In The Proper Sequence
Adding ingredients into the blender in the right order is key for breaking down those tough, fibrous, leafy, or icy ingredients into a smooth consistency. According to Vitamix, this is the recommended way to layer in each ingredient, depending on the size of your kitchen blender:
- Large containers : First add any wet ingredients , followed by dry goods, leafy greens, fresh fruits/vegetables, then frozen ingredients last.
- Small containers : First add frozen ingredients, fresh fruits/vegetables, leafy greens, dry goods, and wet ingredients last.
How To Make A Smoothie Thicker

A common problem with smoothie making is to have it come out thin and runnyafter all, you wanted a smoothie, not juice. This is an easy problem to solve. Simply throw in some of those ingredients well known for thickening smoothiesice, avocado, protein powder, chia or flax seedsand re-blend, says Alder.

Tips For The Perfect Smoothie
- Frozen fruit. I prefer to use frozen fruit because it makes the consistency extra creamy and thick. When you use fresh fruit with ice, the consistency can get a little watery and seedy. If using fresh fruit, you may want to add both ice and little Greek yogurt to get that perfect creamy texture.
- Add milk first. Pour the milk in the blender first before adding any of the other ingredients. This makes it easier to blend all of the ingredients together.
- Servings. This recipes makes enough for my 3 kids and I, however it would probably only serve 2 adults. If you want to double the recipe, I would make one batch and then the other right after. If you add too much frozen fruit to the blender, I find it doesnt blend as well. The perfect amount seems to be around 2-3 cups.
- Toppings. Dont forget the toppings! I love topping mine with fresh strawberries and bananas, as well as granola, coconut flakes and extra chia seeds. The added toppings really take it over the top!

What Do I Use To Sweeten A Smoothie
All of these smoothies here use frozen fruit as a base, which adds a nice baseline of sweetness that you can build on if your tastebuds would like. My recommendation is to blend up your smoothie without any added sweetener, then taste. Add in honey or maple syrup to taste. Many times, I dont need to add anything! Another great natural option for sweetening: pitted Medjool dates. Throw in one or two of those bad boys and let the blender do its thing. Youd be amazed at how sweet your smoothie will be!

How To Make The Best Beet Smoothie
To make this smoothie plenty sweet and not so beet-y, I added plenty of other fresh ingredients:
- Blueberries. Sweet, fruity, and a delightful pairing with our lovely beets.
- Pineapple. The magical smoothie fruit. No matter what other, erm, questionable, ingredients you add to a smoothie, pineapple sweetens and smooths their flavor. Need proof? Check out the reviews on this Kale Pineapple Smoothie.
- Greek Yogurt. Creaminess + filling protein. If youd like the Beet Smoothie vegan, you can omit it or use a dairy-free yogurt.
- Honey. If you are a diehard beet-lover you may be happy without it, but for those who like a sweeter smoothie, feel free to add to taste.

How To Make Smoothies //
I like to make a batch of 3 or 4 almond milk smoothies at a time. If I make 5, it is too much for the blender.
Keep your make ahead almond milk smoothies in the freezer until you need a quick breakfast on the go. The consistency is best if you allow them to thaw at room temperature. I dont recommend thawing them in the refrigerator unless you prefer very loose smoothies.
How To Make The Best Banana Smoothie

My basic smoothie recipe calls for four simple ingredients:
Banana I use one banana to make one large or two smaller smoothies. For the best tasting smoothie, use a ripe banana. For the creamiest banana smoothie, use frozen banana slices. Ive shared how I freeze bananas for smoothies below.
Half an orange When I have oranges in the house, I love adding them to my morning smoothie. It adds extra vitamin C and tropical flavor. If you dont have oranges on hand, dont worry, you can substitute other fruits like mango, pineapple, and berries.
Plain or Greek yogurt I dont always add yogurt to my smoothies, but when I do have it in the fridge, adding a spoonful ensures a protein-packed and creamy smoothie. For a smoothie without yogurt, add a little extra fruit or include veggies like spinach or kale.
Water or milk To help the ingredients blend, I like adding a splash of liquid to the blender. For a smoothie without milk, use water. It still tastes amazing. For more creaminess add milk .
To make the smoothie, I add everything into a blender and then blend until smooth. For an icy cold smoothie, throw in a handful of ice or use frozen fruits.

Can You Make This Mango Smoothie Vegan Or Dairy
Absolutely! You can make this mango smoothie with or without dairy milk. And if youd like homemade recipe options for some of the ingredients, check out my cashew milk, almond milk, or oat milk. I also have homemade yogurt or homemade coconut yogurt .
You could also use store-bought dairy-free milk and dairy-free yogurt. Or you could use full-fat greek yogurt for an ultra-thick consistency. Its entirely up to you.
Choosing Fresh Or Frozen Fruits And Vegetables
When it comes to what goes in your smoothie, only you can decide. There are no wrong answers here!
Pros of Fresh Fruit & Vegetables: Its a great way to use up fruit that is no longer visually appealing, but still tastes good. Think browning bananas, soft strawberries, blackberries so ripe they are falling apart. All still have good flavor, but arent what youd pick first out of the fruit basket on the counter.
Cons of Fresh Fruit & Vegetables: You have to make your smoothies on your fruits schedule, not your own. If those fresh fruits no longer taste good, they wont make your smoothie taste good. If the fruit is underripe, it will be harder to blend and may not make for the smoothest smoothie.
Pros of Frozen Fruit& Vegetables: Frozen fruit makes a thicker texture that stays colder longer without watering down the flavor. Most frozen fruit is picked at peak ripeness. You can have summer blackberries in January or tree ripe peaches in March. Also, unless you are shopping an in-season market stand, frozen fruit is usually cheaper than fresh.
Cons of Frozen Fruit& Vegetables: If you arent using a high power blender, frozen solid fruit may be more than it can handle. While my Vitamix does just fine with it, my stick blender would leave frozen fruit in chunks. Let the frozen fruit thaw on the counter for 10 minutes or so before making your smoothie.
