Autoimmune Disease Healthy Journey:
Here is where I am going to get a little personal. I was a healthy and active girl when I got hit with an autoimmune disease that rocked my world. I visited the doctor and he performed an insane amount of blood tests to figure out what was going on with my body.
I was dealing with the debilitating effects of several autoimmune diseases — rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis diseases, among others.
I didn’t think I would be dealing with arthritis in my 30’s! My weight had even skyrocketed for no apparent reason .
After many blood tests confirmed I was dealing with several autoimmune issues, I was referred to both a rheumatologist and endocrinologist to deal with the effects of my immune system going haywire. The specialists wanted to put me on a host of medications to help with the swelling and inflammation, all with a list of negative side effects. I felt as if I was ALWAYS at the doctor. I didn’t want to just put on a band-aid.
I went home and my husband and I just sobbed together on the couch , afraid of what the future might hold. After a good cry, I felt determined to figure out what the ROOT cause of my health issues was. I started studying like crazy. I began driving around to every library in town, picking up stacks of health books, and researching everything I could about my disease. I became a full-on nerd!

You can drink smoothies as a snack or meal replacement, but its a good idea to know which types to choose especially if you have a specific fitness or body composition goal in mind.
Theres a common misconception that smoothies are inherently low calorie snacks, but some smoothies pack over 1,000 calories depending on their size and ingredients.
Generally, a 200300-calorie smoothie with 10 grams of protein is a great snack, whereas a 400800-calorie smoothie providing at least 20 grams of protein is better suited as a meal replacement. Its best to assess your goals and calorie needs to determine your specific needs.

When my readers ask about easy ways to increase their veggie intake, I almost always mention smoothies! Drinking vegetables is more palatable than eating veggies for some people. Plus, you can put a LOT of produce in a single smoothie.
Even better, whipping up a smoothie requires minimal prep time. But making a vegetable smoothie that actually tastes good does require some thought. Thats why I put together this post on the best vegetables for smoothies. Spoiler alert: leafy greens arent the only veggies you can blend.
A Green Smoothie That Is Not Green
Berries are so strongly coloured that they can easily hide green if needed.
My combination is: Blueberries + Strawberries + Broccoli + Cucumber + Vanilla + Plain Yoghurt + Milk.

What Are The Best Vegetables For Smoothies
In general, you can toss any vegetable into a smoothie and make it taste good. But, there are definitely some that will give you the best results.
- Greens. Leafy greens are a smoothies best friend. They blend up so well, the taste is easily overpowered, and the color is fun! You can easily cover the green up by adding something like blueberries.
- Sweet potato. Cooked sweet potato is the perfect vegetable for a blending. Naturally sweet, it adds a delicious thickness and creaminess to your drink.
- Beets. Simply buy a package of pre-cooked beets and toss some in. They add sweetness and a really fun pink color to food without a ton of effort.
- Peas. Not only are peas sweet, they are packed with protein! If possible, frost your peas to ensure they blend in smooth.
- Squash. From zucchini to yellow squash to pumpkin, these are the perfect vegetable. They blend up smooth as well as having a very light taste.
- Avocado. Pack in some healthy fats by blending in some fresh avocado.
- Cauliflower. The flavor is so light and since its white kids wont notice it at first glance.

The orange, pineapple, lime, and lemon are rich in Vitamin C to strengthen your immune system. Cucumber contains high levels of B vitamins to relieve anxiety and protect against the damaging effects of stress. Celery is a great source of vitamin K to prevent excessive bleeding while carrots contain beta-carotene for skin and eye health.
To create this green smoothie, you will need these ingredients:
- 1/4 of each- orange, lime, lemon, and pineapple
- 2 carrots, peeled
In a blender, mix all ingredients. If you find the mixture too thick for your preference, add water. Pour the finished smoothie in a mason jar or any glass of your choice and serve. Enjoy while still cold.

Should I Use Fresh Or Frozen Fruits And Veggies In Smoothies
This really depends on what youre adding, the texture youre going for, and how much liquid you want to add.
First, I highly recommend either fresh or defrosted leafy greens if you dont have a high powered blender.
However, for things like cauliflower, broccoli, or even some squash, like butternut, I use frozen regularly.
I typically always use frozen fruit because of the cost. If you use all fresh fruits and vegetables, your smoothie will be much thinner and probably require less liquid.
In addition, I really enjoy adding frozen bananas. Its a great way to use up overripe bananas freeze them and use later! They tend to add a milkshake type consistency.
Do Smoothies Aid Weight Loss
Smoothies are frequently marketed as a weight loss tool.
Research suggests they may be effective for this purpose as long as theyre not causing you to exceed your daily calorie needs.
While some people find smoothies an easy way to monitor food portions and stay on top of their weight loss goals, others may not feel as full when they drink their calories rather than eating them.
That said, several small studies demonstrate that smoothies used as meal replacements can be as filling as solid foods, and that drinking calories instead of chewing them doesnt necessarily lead to overeating when solid foods are consumed later .
Drinking versus chewings effect on your feelings of fullness may be more closely related to how satisfying you expect the meal to be rather than the form of the food itself.
One small study found that people who viewed a large serving of fruit prior to drinking a fruit smoothie felt fuller and more satisfied afterward, compared with people who viewed a small serving of fruit prior to drinking the smoothie .
This occurred even though both groups consumed an equal amount of calories and nutrients from the smoothie.
Ultimately, although weight loss can be a complex process with many contributing factors, its important to expend more calories than you take in. If a smoothie helps you offset other calories you would otherwise consume, it can be an effective weight loss tool.

Mix together, water, lemon juice, turmeric, ginger, cayenne pepper and cinnamon. Add stevia, honey or maple syrup to taste. The cayenne pepper adds a kick to it so not everyone can handle it.

Are Fresh Or Frozen Vegetables Best For Smoothies
Besides leafy greens, I actually prefer to use frozen vegetables for smoothies. Frozen vegetables can replace ice in smoothie recipes to add a desirable thick texture and refreshing cold temperature. Frozen vegetables are just as nutritious as fresh vegetables, but are usually less expensive.
You can buy pre-frozen vegetables to keep in your freezer, or freeze some yourself. Note that its important to blanch fresh vegetables before you freeze them. Blanching helps preserve nutrients, color, and texture of the vegetable.
This all being said, you can absolutely use fresh vegetables in smoothies, too! Add ice to your blend as desired to make your smoothie thicker if using fresh vegetables.
