What Is Daily Harvest And How Does It Work
Daily Harvest is a subscription-based food delivery service. Everything is shipped frozen and can be prepared in just a matter of minutes. I first got hooked on Daily Harvest a few years ago when they were primarily doing smoothies. Now, theyve expanded their options so you can order anything from soup to flatbreads to ice cream.
Your order frequency can be adjusted based on your needs. They have both weekly and monthly plan options and you can receive anywhere from 6-26 items per box. Each delivery can be customized or you can save your favorites and receive those every time.

Daily Harvest Delivery And Packaging: Efficient
When the Daily Harvest Box arrived, it was slightly bigger than I expected, but it was packed with a boatload of yummy goodies, all kept frozen with dry ice for convenient storage. The box arrived on the set date around mid-morning, and upon opening, everything was cold to the touch. Most of the items remained upright, though some had been jostled sideways or upside down, which likely occurred during delivery. The box, internal liner, and cardboard dividers were all recyclable, so the only thing that went to waste was the plastic wrapping around the dry ice. The individual food containers can also be recycled and the bowls for the harvest, forager, and oat bowls are even compostable. You do have to let the dry ice sit out for 24 hours to evaporate since you can’t dispose of it like normal ice , which is slightly inconvenient but not a deal breaker by any means.
Daily Harvest Chia Parfaits Review
I was pleasantly surprised by the chia parfaits. I have made chia pudding on my own but didnt really like it. The Chocolate Protein + Banana was really yummy and filling.
I divided it in half and had it for breakfast for two days. I havent tried the other flavor but Im looking forward to trying it soon!

First Let’s Talk About The Ingredients
As a nutritionist, the first thing I look at on a label is the ingredients list. I always make sure that the list is full of ingredients I can pronounce and understand. I also like to think logically about what the ingredients should and should not be listed for an item I’m buying. For example, there is no reason why high fructose corn syrup and a laundry list of other ingredients should be in my peanut butter: it should simply be peanuts and maybe a bit of salt, but that’s it. Since ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, I always take a look at the three first ingredients to make sure they are a whole food that I’m familiar with.
With that being said, ingredients were the first standout for me when analyzing the Daily Harvest items. The majority of the ingredients used are organic, and I really like that the meals are frozen. A lot of us associate frozen foods with tons of sodium and preservatives, but when done right, frozen foods can even be more nutritious than fresh. Frozen produce in general is often flash frozen directly after harvest or preparation, and this helps to lock in nutrients that fresh foods may gradually lose when in transit to the grocery store. Daily Harvest works directly with farms to source nourishing ingredients and freeze produce within 24 hours of harvest to lock in nutrients and flavor.
Daily Harvest Menu: Varied & Healthy
When signing up for Daily Harvest, you should note that it’s a completely plant-based, vegan food company and understand what that entails. “A well-balanced plant-based or vegan diet should prioritize increased fruits, whole grains, legumes, and vegetables consumption instead of relying on ultra-processed vegan food alternatives,” says Figueroa.
When weighing the merits of plant-based diets, Figueroa emphasizes that “there is no one-size fits all approach to healthy eating. Each individual person has diverse and unique needs.” Figueroa also warns that any diet that restricts certain foods can trigger disordered eating and recommends reaching out to a trusted health professional before making any extreme changes to your diet.
The fact that Daily Harvest’s foods arrive frozen may give you pause. I get it. But there are actually some health benefits for choosing frozen foods over freshI’m not talking about frozen dinners you find at the grocery store, but actual whole foods like fruits and veggies that have been frozen directly after harvest. “Frozen foods are usually harvested at the peak of their ripeness and then promptly frozen within hours,” Figueroa says. “As a result, frozen foods may retain a fresher taste and a better nutrient profile, since freezing prevents foods from spoiling and losing vitamins and minerals.”

A Combination Of Microwave Meals And Actual Cooking: Purple Carrot
If you cant decide between a service that sends you meal kits versus fully prepared dishes, try one that does both, like plant-based Purple Carrot. While you cant order from both plans simultaneously, you can switch off from week to week, popping mapo tofu in the microwave one Monday for lunch, then cooking 25-minute elote bowls for the next weeks dinner.
Menu From Green Blender
The difference between Green Blender and Daily Harvest is that Green Blender specializes exclusively in smoothies. Here, they attach great importance to the balance of tastes and make sure that the products are as fresh as possible.
Green Blender decided to focus not on quantity but on the quality of products, and many customers love the food delivery service for this.
In competition when it comes to Green Blender vs Daily Harvest, the first company certainly loses out in terms of the number of products it provides. But here, we have selected excellent quality organic foods that you will definitely like and can be given to children.
Green Blender is trying to create separate smoothies for people who are on a weight loss diet, have some kind of dietary restrictions, for example, allergies to dairy products or gluten. Unlike the competitor, Green Blender has special portions for vegetarians and vegans, which also attracts a large number of people.
Since Daily Harvest provides many times more items on its menu, it can be considered the winner of this round.

How To Prepare Daily Harvest Foods
Naturally, the steps for preparing Daily Harvest products depend on the type that youre making.
Most require a liquid base for either blending, soaking, or heating the food. The company recommends blending the smoothies with water, dairy or nut milk, or coconut milk, and the soups work best with water or broth.
You will need a freezer to store your delivery in and a 16-ounce capacity blender or bigger to make the smoothies. Once blended, the smoothies can be poured back into the container it arrived in.
Who Should Probably Skip Daily Harvest
If you’re trying to go high protein or are the carnivorous type, Daily Harvest meals may not be a good pick for you. While a lot of the smoothies and bowls get a protein punch from things like lentils, beans and kale and most are all chock-full of vitamins and antioxidants, there are no meats, fish or alt-meats to be found in these Daily Harvest containers.
Daily Harvest is not great for kids. Now take this with a grain of salt, because every kid has different tastes, but the Daily Harvest flavor profiles tend to skew toward an older audience, in my opinion. With spices like turmeric and lots of hearty, sometimes bitter veggies and greens, it just may not be ideal for the youngsters in your squad. This is probably less true of certain meals like fruit smoothies, cacao protein bites and cinnamon oat bowls.

Overall Taste And Satisfaction
Daily Harvest meals are prepared plant-based food at its best. The meals were shockingly textured, flavorful, and fragrant for frozen food. Although in my past experience frozen produce can sometimes end up tasting kind of blah, mushy, and all the same, the flavors were strong and easily identifiable the textures appropriately delicate and tender or firm and crunchy, depending on the ingredient. The mulberries in my oatmeal were plump and juicy while the steel-cut oats were firm and chewy. The diced carrots in my bolognese were crunchy while the lentils were just soft enough and the tomatoes ripe.
My only taste complaints are the texture of the flatbread crusts, which are made with cassava flour and veggies, like broccoli or cauliflower. They were a little mushy in the middlestill yummy, TBH, but not the optimal texture.
Smoothie : Tart Cherry + Raspberry
I know this isn’t the prettiest smoothie. It is actually not pretty at all! But this was one of my absolute favorites from this first week. It was full of cocoa and kale, which gave this mix of blueberries, bananas, and spinach a dark and luxurious taste. This is another one of those smoothies that could have easily doubled for ice cream, making it feel more like a ritzy dessert than a healthy drink. I used almond milk to add in extra creaminess and I could have easily added in protein powder to this heavier beverage if I had thought to do so at the time.

Kale + Sweet Potato Flatbread Review
WOW! All I can say about this flatbread! It was SO delicious. I initially gave it a B+/A- but then found myself craving it and dreaming about it in the weeks to follow so I’m going to actually give it an A. I did add a slice of cheese onto half of it. Honestly it didn’t do much in the way of adding flavor the flatbread is so good on its own but I was starving so added it for the extra protein. And also because mentally, I like seeing cheese on my flatbreads HA! As someone who typically makes their own Sweet Potato Kale Flatbread, I have to say Daily Harvest did an amazing job with theirs! Plus it was nice to have it ready in just a few minutes instead of an hour and having to roll out the dough, etc.
Flavor Freshness And Quality: Frozen Fresh At Peak Harvest
The foods we received were consistently fresh and of excellent quality. The flatbreads featured some interesting ingredient pairings, though it’s worth mentioning that some meals, including the lentil + cremini soup, lacked the comforting savory and robust flavors that you would expect from a soup. We paired the harvest bowls and soups with other meals to compensate for what we noticed was a lack of flavor.
Daily Harvest says it sources produce at peak ripeness and then freezes items within hours to lock in the nutrients and flavors. In addition, Daily Harvest commits to featuring 95% organic ingredients, and all products listed under the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen are always organic.
