How To Make A Smoothie With Ice Cream

DIY Healthy Smoothie! (Strawberry Banana)

A smoothie with ice cream? Uh, yes please. Once you scoop ice cream into your blender, its technically considered a milkshake, but go ahead and make that switch for an occasional indulgent treat. Ice cream, of course, makes for an exceptionally creamy, sweet, and decadent smoothie experience.

Love the idea but dont want to do dairy? Try a non-dairy ice cream, such as that varieties made of coconut milk.

I love ½ cup coconut milk ice cream blended with 1/4 to 1/2 cup almond, coconut or whole milk, says Adler. Then, its optional to add 1 to 2 teaspoons of cocoa powder or 1 handful cocoa nibs to make it chocolaty, a teaspoon of peanut butter, or fresh mintor all of the above.

  • tip 3Flavorful fresh mint pairs nicely with strawberries. For a strawberry smoothie festive garnish, top with small fresh mint leaves. Or if mint leaves are larger, stack them, then roll up like a cigar and thinly slice crosswise.

A Simple Strawberry Smoothie

The other day I was flipping through one of my favorite cooking magazines and noticed a strawberry smoothie recipe. It immediately caught my attention because of the vast array of ingredients, 15 grocery items to be exact.

I stopped in wonder. Who in their right mind is going to go to the store and buy 15 items just to make smoothies?

Some smoothie-makers like to add protein powder, flax, or minerals to their smoothies to up the health benefits, but I wasnt fooled. My beloved magazine was putting on airs to dress up a simple strawberry smoothie.

Like wearing heels with your gym shorts, this just doesnt make sense.

Guidelines To The Best Strawberry Smoothie

When I decided to dive into making smoothies, I gave myself some mandatory guidelines to create healthy and delicious recipes. All my smoothie recipes follow these guidelines.

This is important to me. There are plenty of desserts I make that do have sugar, but I want my smoothies to be healthy. I make them for breakfast or for an afternoon snack, so they have to be nutritious.

There are a variety of other foods that sweeten the smoothies, if they need to be sweetened. Whole dates, honey, maple syrup, juice, and whole oranges are a few of these sweeteners.

  • Avoid ice cubes.

If you drink your smoothie in a flash after you make it, you may be able to get away with adding ice cubes.

However, if you get distracted, drive the kids to school, start a load of laundry, take the dog out, etc., your smoothie may sit on the counter for more than a few minutes.

The longer it sits on the counter, the more ice cubes can melt, watering down your smoothie. This dilutes the fruit flavor and may make you want to add sugar to sweeten it.

Now, if you like the iciness of a smoothie and you arent getting it from the frozen fruit, make ice cubes out of milk, juice, or coconut water. Then if you add them to your smoothie and it melts, it wont dilute the flavor like water will.

  • Use organic fruit.

If possible, use fruit free of pesticides, herbicides, and waxes or other coatings. If you are trying to make a healthy smoothie, start with pure and healthy ingredients.

Thaw Strawberries For 5 Minutes Before Using

Strawberry Smoothie

Frozen strawberries, especially larger ones, can be hard on your blender. To prevent damage to your blender and for greater ease in blending, let the strawberries thaw at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes before using. Or, you can microwave them for 30 seconds to a minute, just until theyre losing their frost and starting to soften a bit.

If you still have trouble blending, pause, stir and let the mixture rest for a few more minutes before trying again. You can always add another splash or two of milk if you need more traction.

What Milk To Use In Your Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Another question I have been asked is what type of milk I suggest.

Any milk you have will work.

You wont really notice a flavor difference, or much of one.

I used 2% milk as it is what I had on hand, but you can use whole milk, almond milk, soy milk, whatever basic milk you have on hand.

Dairy free or dairy it wont make much of a difference.

No need to run to the store, just use what you have!

I hope you love this recipe as much as our family did!

Should You Use Fresh Mango Or Frozen Mango

Im a fan of seasonal eating so if mangoes are in season Ill use fresh mangoes for this smoothie recipe. You can cube the mango or use a glass to remove the mango from the skin .

If you use fresh mango then make sure youre using a frozen banana in the recipe to keep the smoothie nice and thick and cold.

But if fresh mangoes arent available or in season, then absolutely use frozen mango. If you use frozen mango, you can use a fresh banana. In other words, just make sure at least the mango or the banana is frozen.
