How To Store Avocados

I know you feel me on this one. You buy a bag of unripe avocados and it seems like they never ripen, until BAM! they ripen all at once. Its more than you can eat at once. What to do? Avocados are a fruit that freezes exceptionally well, probably due to the healthy fats.

Freeze the avocados on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then transfer to freezer-proof bags or other airtight containers. The frozen avocados will keep up to six months or more in a deep freezer, or several months in a regular freezer.

Once avocados have ripened sufficiently, they can also be placed directly in the fridge where they will stay good for a few days longer. Unripe avocados can also be refrigerated and brought out to the counter to ripen at room temperature. While room temp avocados can be used in this avocado banana smoothie, I think frozen ones add a little bit extra to this blend.

Checking for quality. Some products boast meal replacement but dont live up to expectations. Look for at least 3 grams of fiber in your shake. The protein content should be higher than or equal to the amount of carbohydrates in the shake.

Low calories. This may be an advantage in some cases but a disadvantage in others. You cut back on calories when you want to lose weight. However, cutting out too many calories is dangerous. Meal replacement shakes are typically between 150 and 200 calories, which is probably nowhere near what you would eat during a meal. Be sure to make up calories with other meals and snacks.

Personally, I cant stand any brown spots on my avocado, even if Im adding it to a smoothie, so freezing perfect avocados in my freezer packs so theyre ready to blend later is a great option.

In order to freeze an avocado for your smoothie freezer pack, just dice it into small cubes so it breaks down easily in the blender once frozen. A little lemon juice helps keep it from browning as well. Then, add it to the freezer pack and freeze.

How To Make A Healthy Smoothie

1.Start with liquid. Water, juice, non-dairy milk, milk, and even green tea or coconut water are all good low-calorie, low-sugar options.

2. Add protein and fat for staying-power. Nut butter, garbanzo beans, yogurt, silken tofu, and avocado are all great choices for flavor and texture.

3.Pack in vegetables. Add kale or spinach, parsley and beet greens, and maybe cucumber and celery for some fresh flavor. Love veggies? Check out these veggie smoothies and green smoothies.

4. Add fresh or frozen fruit. Almost any cut fresh or frozen fruit is delicious. When a smoothie recipe uses fresh fruit, add ice cubes to the blender along with the fresh fruit to give it better texture.

  • To freeze bananas, peel and cut into 1-inch pieces. Place the slices on a baking sheet to freeze and then transfer the frozen pieces to a resealable freezer bag to store.
