A Good Blender Is Worth It

Homemade Protein Shake -Natural Recipe

I got a Blendtec just over 2 years ago, and I can never go back to a normal blender again. Mine tells me how many times Ive used it and Im a few smoothies away from 800 blends! Thats amazing, and it also shows how much I have used it. A good blender will whip you up a thick delicious smoothie with no chunks in about 45 seconds. If you are going to go green on any of your smoothies, a good blender is the key to getting all those healthy leafy greens to blend and have a great texture. I love my high power blender and highly recommend one.

Green Protein Shake Ingredients

To make this green protein smoothie recipe, you will need the following ingredients :

  • Spinach: This is an excellent ingredient to include in shakes, because it is packed with a ton of vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
  • Pineapple: This is the magical ingredient that naturally sweetens and flavors the shake so well that you cant even taste the spinach.
  • Banana: This gives your smoothie a rich and creamy consistency. It is also a great source of potassium and dietary fiber.
  • Water: This serves as the liquid base for the smoothie.
  • Protein Powder: This boosts the protein content of your smoothie immensely. If you can, use a natural and organic protein powder that contains no additives, fillers, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives. I love and use this one from Thrive Market.
  • Greek yogurt: This adds richness, creaminess and additional protein. I recommend using plain and unsweetened yogurt only, because a lot of flavored yogurts contain a ton of sugar.
  • Honey: This adds natural and unrefined sweetness. Not all packaged honey is created equal, so I recommend using one that is 100% pure, raw, and unfiltered for optimal health benefits. I use this one from Thrive Market.

Choosing Fresh Or Frozen Fruits And Vegetables

When it comes to what goes in your smoothie, only you can decide. There are no wrong answers here!

Pros of Fresh Fruit & Vegetables: Its a great way to use up fruit that is no longer visually appealing, but still tastes good. Think browning bananas, soft strawberries, blackberries so ripe they are falling apart. All still have good flavor, but arent what youd pick first out of the fruit basket on the counter.

Cons of Fresh Fruit & Vegetables: You have to make your smoothies on your fruits schedule, not your own. If those fresh fruits no longer taste good, they wont make your smoothie taste good. If the fruit is underripe, it will be harder to blend and may not make for the smoothest smoothie.

Pros of Frozen Fruit& Vegetables: Frozen fruit makes a thicker texture that stays colder longer without watering down the flavor. Most frozen fruit is picked at peak ripeness. You can have summer blackberries in January or tree ripe peaches in March. Also, unless you are shopping an in-season market stand, frozen fruit is usually cheaper than fresh.

Cons of Frozen Fruit& Vegetables: If you arent using a high power blender, frozen solid fruit may be more than it can handle. While my Vitamix does just fine with it, my stick blender would leave frozen fruit in chunks. Let the frozen fruit thaw on the counter for 10 minutes or so before making your smoothie.

This Shake Is A Bit Too Thick How Can I Make It Less So

If you find that your protein shake is a little too thick, just add water or more non-dairy milk until you reach the desired consistency! If you’re looking for an even thinner smoothie, try adding ice cubes to get the right thickness and chilliness.

What To Add To Fruit Smoothies To Gain Weight

Berries, bananas, and pineapple are great examples of fruits that can be used in high calorie weight gain smoothies.

The hard part is that fruits that fit together are more important than single fruits. The pairings make the flavor, and most fruits are going to offer up extra calories when theyre blended into a smoothie due to the sugar content.

Bananas and other starchy fruits are difficult to balance for texture but offer a combination of starches and sugars that can bump up the calorie content of a smoothie.

    When Should You Consume Protein

Many exercisers understand the importance of eating before a workout to give their body the fuel it needs to perform. However, it is equally important to replenish your body after a workout.

Eating after a workout may seem less intuitive, mainly because you may not feel very hungry right after laying it all down at the gym. However, an exercise session will deplete your energy stores, so eating allows you to refuel. Additionally, research has found that right after a workout, your body may be primed to use glycogen and protein to repair itself.

How soon should you eat after a workout? Generally, you should try to eat something within 45 minutes of exercising. According to some research, delaying your meal after working out could lower the rate of glycogen synthesis.

If you arent ready to tuck into a super-sized entrée right after getting home from the gym, a muscle protein shake could be the perfect way to get protein into your body without overwhelming your appetite.
