Making this smoothie with a frozen banana is key. The banana lends natural sweetness, and when frozen, does wonders for the texture.

Tips For Making This Homemade Protein Shake Recipe

Here are some pointers I have learned over the years about how to make the best homemade protein shakes:

  • When adding your ingredients to your blender, always add the liquid first near the blades. Doing this will help your blender to run a bit more easily whenever you are making a shake.
  • Use a Vitamix Blender, because it is the BEST blender for making smoothies! A Vitamix is a high-powered blender that breaks up frozen fruit, vegetables, ice and any other dense ingredients into oblivion with no chunks and easy clean-up. Best of all, the Vitamix blender is super versatile, so you can also use it to make soups, sauces, and homemade nut butters.
  • Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie Ingredients

    • Unsweetened almond milk or skim milk
    • Frozen bananas
    • Protein powder or collagen peptides
    • A splash of vanilla extract
    • Honey
    • Spinach

Although I say the spinach is optional, I highly recommend you try it. Not only does the spinach take this smoothie from boring beige to beautiful green, but, it also gets us a serving of dark leafy greens! We can all use more of those, right? Bonus: you will not taste it I promise!

Use my recipe as a starting point and adapt it to suit your tastes. A scoop of cocoa powder would add chocolaty flavor. Some chia seeds or hemp seeds would add omega-3s. You could even swap the peanut butter for the nut butter of your choice. This smoothie has the potential to be a nutritional powerhouse.

    • Chocolate: The only thing that makes this smoothie better is to add some chocolate. Whether its chocolate chips, chocolate syrup, or chocolate milk its takes it over the top.
    • Make it even healthier: Add ground flax seeds, chia seeds and oatmeal to the smoothie to add flavor, texture and nutrition.
    • Add some Green: Yes it may make the color a little funky, but you wont be able to taste it. Add spinach for a boost of fiber and iron.
    • Power Up: Add a bit of flavor and even more protein by adding a scoop of your favorite protein powder. Vanilla or Chocolate would make yummy additions.
    • Top it: Slice up bananas, drizzle with peanut butter, sprinkle with chopped peanuts or mini chocolate chips for a decorative top. And yes you can use whipped cream too.

Chocolate, Banana & Peanut Butter Protein Shake | A Sweet Pea Chef

Bananas: I like to use frozen ripe bananas to make the shake consistency super creamy and milkshake-like. You want them to be ripe, but not too ripe! They will need to be frozen overnight to be completely solid for the shake.

Protein powder: you can use whatever protein powder you like! I personally love chocolate and use this plant-based protein brand.

Peanut butter: for some added protein and delicious flavor!

Hemp seeds: These seeds are full of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. But they are also perfect for blending into smoothies or shakes because they help make the consistency super creamy!

Nut milk: I recommend using almond milk or cashew milk!

    Cinnamon: for flavor!

How To Store Banana Pb Fit Powder & Chocolate Protein Shake

If you arent ready to drink your shake as soon as you make it, you can store it in the fridge. Sometimes I will do this the night before if I know that I am going to have a hectic morning. Just blend the ingredients and store them in an air-tight container in the fridge. You wont want to keep them in there for long no more than 2 days. Keep in mind that you can taste the difference this shake is definitely better when enjoyed fresh. Give it a good stir before drinking it leftover in case anything has separated.

You can also freeze this PB smoothie mixture. After blending, pour it into an airtight container and place it in the freezer. It will last up to 3 weeks. When youre ready to drink it, let it thaw in the fridge until its back to smoothie consistency. If you think its too thick, you can blend it with a little milk to thin it out.

How To Freeze Bananas For Smoothies

Banana & Peanut Butter Protein Smoothie

You can find frozen bananas in some super-markets, but freezing them yourself is super easy and very affordable. They can be frozen in slices, chunks, pureed or even whole, depending on what you are using them for.

1 ½ medium-sized bananas equals about 1 cup of sliced bananas.

To freeze bananas for smoothies, remove the peels and cut them into half inch slices. Place the slices into a freezer bag or freezer-safe container and freeze until you are ready to make your smoothie. Bananas will stay good in the freezer for up to 3 months.

    Why Make This Protein Shake

High protein: this protein shake recipe gets you 13g protein per serving!

Favorite flavors: if you are skeptical about coffee + peanut butter + banana, dont be! Youre going to have to trust us on this one that these flavors are so good.

Easy to make: pop everything into a blender and youre ready to rock!

Do You Need To Freeze The Bananas

I highly recommend freezing your bananas. Since the banana is the only fruit in this recipe, there isnt any opportunity to use other frozen fruit to chill and thicken the smoothie. The frozen banana makes the smoothie very thick and creamy. Trust me, its worth planning ahead!

If you absolutely cant use frozen bananas, use fresh, but then youll need to add additional ice to compensate. The results will likely be much more watery.

There are two blender routes you can take: a full-size blender or a bullet single-serve blender. If youre making more than one smoothie each morning , a full-size blender may be the best option for you, but if youre planning on blending and running out the door, the single-serve blender may be your best bet! Either way, youll want a high-quality blender so that your smoothie turns out silky smooth! This is our favorite full-size blender, and this is a great bullet option for the on-the-go smoothie sippers!

How To Make The Creamiest Chocolate Banana Smoothie

With a few tips & tricks youll have the best creamy chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie every time:

  • Use frozen fruit. This helps keeps the smoothie cold and thick. Sometimes ice doesnt blend as well, so its best to skip unless absolutely necessary.
  • Add more liquid as needed. Dont be afraid to add more liquid if your smoothie is too thick or wont fully blend. High powered blenders tend to blend frozen fruit much better, so if you have a regular or personal size blender, you may need to add more milk.
  • Start at low speed. Youll want to start blending low and then gradually increase to high to help blend all ingredients. Finally end with the blender on low speed.
  • Sweeten to taste. If your chocolate banana smoothie doesnt taste sweet enough for your liking, you can add a 1/2 tablespoon of honey, pure maple syrup or 1 pitted Medjool date. Be sure to use a super ripe frozen banana for the right amount of sweetness to start.

Ingredients In Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie With Greek Yogurt

    Banana Peanut Butter Protein Smoothie

Milk you can use any kind of milk that you prefer! We usually have 2% milk or unsweetened vanilla almond milk, which I love for smoothies.

Greek Yogurt I prefer to use plain whole milk Greek yogurt. You can also use vanilla, which will add good flavor and some more sweetness to the smoothie. You may want to adjust the amount of honey that you use if you use vanilla yogurt.

Frozen Banana I use a frozen banana in my smoothie instead of ice. It makes the smoothie super creamy and you wont get any ice chunks in your smoothie. If you dont have a frozen banana, add a handful of ice to your smoothie along with the unfrozen banana. Also the more ripe your banana, the sweeter it will be. I like to cut up a bunch of ripe bananas and freeze them for my banana smoothies!

Honey adds some sweetness to the smoothie!

Peanut Butter I love peanut butter and typically use the natural drippy kind. Almond butter would also work!

Other Add-Ins: sometimes I add flaxseed meal and chia seed to my smoothie to make it more nutrient dense. A tablespoon of each is usually what I do. I have also added a tablespoon of brewers yeast to this recipe to enhance my milk supply while breastfeeding. If you like adding some greens to your smoothies, go ahead and add a handful of baby spinach.

Peanut butter and banana is without a doubt one of my favorite smoothie ingredient combos. Theyre each incredibly tasty on their own, they offer quite a lot of nutritional value, and theyre both quite filling all of which are factors that make for fantastic smoothie ingredients. Using a frozen banana adds plenty of fiber, potassium, and B-vitamins into this smoothie. Natural peanut butter is a great source of healthy fats and protein that really helps to increase the satiety of this smoothie. Not only that, but studies have found that regular consumption of peanut butter and other types of nuts may help to prevent cardiovascular disease, especially for women with type 2 diabetes.

With peanut butter and banana forming the foundation of this smoothie recipe, youll be getting most of your protein content from a few other choice ingredients. The first item that youll be adding is ½ cup of Greek yogurt, which is one of my all-time favorite smoothie ingredients. Greek yogurt is an incredibly good source of protein that also offers plenty of calcium, potassium, and B-vitamins. On top of that, as with regular yogurt, using Greek yogurt in your smoothies also provides a ton of beneficial probiotics. These tiny microorganisms help to regulate your gut flora, keeping your gastrointestinal system healthy and functioning properly.
