How To Freeze Dairy

Everbowl (10) Ready-to-Blend Frozen Fruit Smoothie Packs on QVC

This is definitely one of the questions I get asked often. Whether you just want to stock up on your favorite dairy product when its on sale or make sure it doesnt go bad when youll be off for a few days, its good to know that you can easily freeze dairy products, and especially greek yogurt.

Frozen milk and cream are best used within 2 months, while cheese can last up to 3 months without losing its taste and consistency.

When freezing greek yogurt, make sure to use them within 2 months. Yogurt may get a little grainy when frozen, but once you whisk it well or incorporate it into your smoothie, you wont be able to taste the difference.

For freezing the greek yogurt for these smoothie packs, I find it helpful to freeze using a simple ice cub tray. Each slot is about 2 tbsp. so I use that as a basis for how much to grab and put into my freezer pack. You could also plop greek yogurt out onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then freeze individually before adding to the smoothie packs if you dont have an ice cube tray.

How To Choose A Smoothie Delivery Service

There are a few factors to consider when selecting a smoothie delivery service thats right for you.

For starters, be sure to check the ingredients list carefully and steer clear of smoothies high in added sugar and artificial flavors, additives, and preservatives.

You should also take a look at the nutrition label and look for a product thats rich in important nutrients like fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Ideally, companies should provide a wide range of smoothies, with a variety of flavors and ingredients to ensure that youre getting plenty of nutrients in your diet.

If you have any dietary restrictions or allergies, you should also look for a company that caters to your specific needs.

Finally, be sure to consider the amount of preparation required for smoothies. While some may be fully prepared and ready to drink, others may need to be blended, shaken, or mixed before consumption.

Basil Avocado Smoothie Packs

These ready-to-go frozen smoothie packs are the perfect way to keep your cool and flood your body with a bounty of nutrients. Many people overlook the punchy flavour that fresh herbs such as basil can add to frosty smoothies. This deliciously thick drink is also a good way to help your muscles recover after a spirited workout. If the frozen contents freeze together, be sure to break up the bundle before adding to blender to allow for easier blending.

Protein Power

If you want to boost protein numbers, you can also blend in a protein powder such as organic hemp or whey.

  • 2 small avocados, peeled and cubed
  • 4 cups baby greens, such as spinach or kale
  • 1 cup packed fresh basil
  • 1 medium cucumber, chopped
  • 2 in piece fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 2 bananas, peeled and roughly chopped

How To Layer Frozen Smoothie Packs

Freezer Smoothie Packs

When I first started making green smoothie freezer kits Id just throw everything into a freezer bag and call it a day.

Well, I quickly learned there is a better way.

Start with the greens. This way, when you dump all the ingredients in the blender the greens are at the top. The greens are easy to process so they dont need to be close to the blades.

Then add the fruit. I put the berries in next because they are smaller and dont need as much power for blending.

Then I add all the heartier or chunkier fruit and veggies. A tip is to chop all the fruit and veggies into smaller chunks. I used to cut the apple into 4 big slices and sometimes Id end up with a piece or two not getting blended. Chopping everything up makes it easier to blend.

I finish with the bananas and chia seeds. Again, if youre using different fruit then just layer the ingredients that would need the most processing at this time.

After you prepare all the frozen smoothie packs then stick in the freezer. You can prepare as many as you like a head of time. These will last for 3 months or longer. Typically, I make them for 2-3 weeks at a time. But if youre feeling motivated, and want to purchase all the ingredients, then make frozen smoothie packs for the month or longer.

Then I add my liquid. I use coconut or almond milk, some water and blend it up! As I said earlier, one kit makes about 2 smoothies so Ill just store the extras in a mason jar for the next day.

Ingredients For Frozen Smoothie Packs

I use a mixture of frozen and fresh fruit in my green smoothies. My go-to smoothie often resembles this detox smoothie recipe but I change it up with the ingredients I have on hand.

My green smoothie formula looks something like this:

1 cup frozen berries

1 apple

1/2 of a ripe banana

1 mini cucumber

1 big handful of baby spinach or super greens

1 tablespoon chia seeds

When blended this makes 2 smoothies, give or take. I drink one that morning and then store the other one in a mason jar for the next morning.

You can use any fruit youd like. I purchase frozen berries because it much cheaper than buying fresh. Most of the time I get 3lb bags of organic frozen berries from Bjs Wholesale for $10 $11. When I cant make it to BJs then I grab a bulk bag from Wegmans.

The great thing about frozen smoothie packs is you can throw any soon to go bad fresh pieces of fruit into the bag. So, if you purchased a bunch of peaches, plums, apples, grapes, or any fruit and noticed they are started to get a little too ripe for your taste then chop it up and throw into a smoothie kit.

Even if youre not ready to make a bunch of kits you can still stick the fruit into a freezer bag to use later on. I do this all the time with bananas and apples.

Again, you can use any fruit in a frozen smoothie kit.

You can add all kinds of power foods into green smoothie freezer kits.

Some favorites are:

  • cacao powder
  • coconut oil

Can You Freeze Fresh Greens For Smoothies

One of the absolute best things about these make ahead fruit smoothie freezer bags is that you can freeze fresh produce and enjoy it later. Gone are the days of grabbing that container of baby spinach or that bag of fresh kale, only to find its old and unusable. Instead, you can add them to your freezer bags and have them ready to blend any time you want. Freezing the greens doesnt have any effect on their flavor, texture, or nutrients when used in these freezer packs!

To freeze raw kale, wash it and get rid of all the woody stems. Drain it of any excess moisture and place in an airtight container or a freezer bag. Kale can last up to 10 months in the freezer and is a great addition to your favorite green smoothie!

What Kind Of Blender Should I Use For Frozen Smoothie Packs

Now, lets talk blenders for a minute. Not all of them are created equal. Ive owned a lot of brands over the yearsFrigidaire, Cuisinart, Ninja, Vitamix, and Oster.

To really pulverize the freezer smoothie packs, youll need a high-powered blender. The two blenders that stand out as clear winners from my experience are:

1. The Vitamix because it is very high-powered, super simple, and will last for an eon. I saved up for and owned a refurbished version that lasted over five years with daily use. I could have sent it in to Vitamix to get fixed but instead opted for the blender below . Polly and I both own Vitamixes and highly recommend them. Very much worth the investment.

2. A more affordable option is the Nutri Ninja Personal and Countertop Blender. The best feature in my opinion is that it allows me to make single serving smoothies that get very smooth. Love the single serving blend-and-go design! If you just want that feature only, consider getting just the Nutri Ninja Pro option, which is much cheaper. The big blender doesnt pulverize as well as the smaller containers do, just so you know. We use the single-serving blender daily!

Odwalla’s Original Superfood Fruit Smoothie

Think twice before you pick up this tempting bottle. “One that I find particularly misleading is Odwalla’s Original Superfood Fruit Smoothie, which is green and covered in imagery of whole fruits and vegetables,” says Moon. “The first ingredient is a filler juice filler juices refer to juices like clarified apple and grape juice. They dilute the more expensive ingredients, and they don’t offer much positive nutrition. Plus, anything that makes it green, when all combined, makes up less than 1% of the smoothie. It’s fat-free, and has minimal protein or fiberso it’s not going to be very satisfying. For all these reasons, I’d avoid this smoothie brand’s bottle, even though it’s high in potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C .”

There are so many reasons I love to shop at Costco. They strive to offer organic options, they have a great produce section, and its possible to get all the smoothie ingredients in one place! Costco stores can be found all over the world, yet each location has slightly different food selections.

No, we did not get endorsed/sponsored by Costco to do this experiment. Quite the opposite. We actually had to be sneaky in the store so we didn’t get kicked out for recording without permission. I felt like I was 15 again.

We’ll pass on this sugar bomb. “In a fairly small 15.2 fluid ounce bottle, there are nearly as many calories that many people should get in a meal. Unfortunately, it won’t keep you feeling satisfied since there are only two grams of protein to slow down digestion,” note The Nutrition Twins. “The kicker is that there are 55 grams of sugar, which is almost 14 teaspoons of sugar. This is more than double the six grams maximum of added sugar that women should get in an entire day and five teaspoons more than the maximum nine teaspoons of sugar men should get daily. Although the sugar is mainly from fruit, it’s just too much in a concentrated formthree-and-a-third apples, one banana, 27 blueberries and three blackberries.”
