Smoothies that include frozen yogurt, sherbet, or even “frozen oatmilk dessert” are not fitness drinks. They are desserts. For example: At Smoothie King, a small Yogurt D-lite sounds like something healthy. But the yogurt they’re referring to isn’t Greek yogurtâit’s frozen yogurt with 17 grams of sugar. As a result, this small drink packs 54 grams of sugar . That’s more than what’s in McDonald’s Hot Fudge Sundae and more than what the USDA Dietary Guidelines recommend you consume in an entire day!

Eat This! Tip: A large scoop of unsweetened Greek or Icelandic yogurt and a handful of frozen fruit will give you exactly the same flavor and consistencyâwithout several nights’ worth of dessert. How Do You Make A Frozen Fruit Smoothie

Frozen Strawberry Greek Yogurt Smoothie (10 minute Breakfast)

I personally have a blender meant just for smoothies but its not necessary any blending machine will work. Toss your blend of frozen fruit, juice, and Greek yogurt into the blender and mix until smooth. I chose to use blueberries, cherries, raspberries, and mango for a tart, yet sweet, blend of fruits.

This recipe makes two servings but can easily be adjusted to make only one serving, or more servings, whatever you desire. Simply cut the recipe in half for one serving. If you double the amount of ingredients called for, remember that it will bump it to four servings since this is enough to make two servings. Each serving is around 16 ounces each.

There are a lot of great juices out there that would work well in your fruit smoothie. I typically use apple juice because its readily available and a neutral flavor base, but other great options are

  • White grape juice
  • Pineapple juice
  • Cranberry juice

You can even use milk, almond milk or coconut milk instead of juice for your smoothie.

I typically use whatever odds and ends of fruit I happen to have in my freezer. You can really mix and match however you like here, just use the same quantity of the fruits listed in the recipe. Some other great fruit options to use are

  • Banana

Smoothies Can Be Tailored To Meet Your Needs

You can drink smoothies as a snack or meal replacement, but its a good idea to know which types to choose especially if you have a specific fitness or body composition goal in mind.

Theres a common misconception that smoothies are inherently low calorie snacks, but some smoothies pack over 1,000 calories depending on their size and ingredients.

Generally, a 200300-calorie smoothie with 10 grams of protein is a great snack, whereas a 400800-calorie smoothie providing at least 20 grams of protein is better suited as a meal replacement. Its best to assess your goals and calorie needs to determine your specific needs.

The difference between the two may be as simple as adjusting the serving size.

Many smoothie chains provide the ingredient and nutrition information for each of their products, which usually come in 1632-ounce servings.

When making smoothies at home, be sure to control your portion size. Fats like nuts, seeds, nut butters, full fat yogurts, and avocado will provide more calories but increase nutrient density. Meanwhile, sugary add-ins like syrups will provide more calories without quality nutrients.

Summary

Smoothies may aid weight loss if they help you maintain a calorie deficit. However, they can be high in calories, so you should choose those that will fit into your daily calorie needs.

What Is A Correct Portion Size

The guidance for the majority of us is to limit our daily intake of smoothies and juices to one glass of 150ml. This contributes a maximum of one of our five-a-day.For a child, a smoothie portion will depend on their age and activity levels. A useful tip is to only use the amount of food a child would eat if the food was offered to them whole, rather than blended.

The Downside To Using Fruit Yogurt In Your Smoothie

Blueberry Smoothie with Greek Yogurt and Honey

Blending up a healthy smoothie is one of our favorite ways of getting those much-needed servings of fruits and veggies to our kids and ourselves. They are so versatile and as Blender Happy shares, there are only three ingredients you really need to make a slammin’ smoothie: fruit, protein, and a liquid. But the sky’s the limit when it comes to creating your favorite concoction. Throw in some nuts or flaxseed, add some turmeric or cocoa powder, or go green and fill-up on spinach and kale because smoothies really allow us to customize this meal in a glass to our liking.

But one of the most important ingredients we add to our smoothies is the protein. Many of us choose yogurt because it is helps to create the perfect creamy consistency we love in this drink. Dr. Oz shares that in yogurt, specifically of the Greek variety, you are getting a gluten-free ingredient that also serves as an excellent probiotics source. But when choosing the perfect yogurt for your smoothie, you may want to stay clear of yogurt with fruit at the bottom or any flavored yogurt and here’s why.
