Daily Harvest Unboxing | Smoothies, Soups, Easy!
  • You dont see the value. If having individual frozen vegan meals sent to your home isnt a priority, this meal service wont work for you.
  • You want meat in your meals. Daily Harvest provides vegan frozen meals. Sure, you can go to the store and purchase chicken or beef to add to your meals, but it defeats the purpose, and using another meal kit company might be better.
  • You like to cook and prefer fresh ingredients. Each cup is frozen, and all you need to do is heat, blend, and go. If you dont need this convenience, you might be better off with a different meal kit service.

How Easy Are Daily Harvest Meal Kits To Prepare

Extremely easy. Many of the Daily Harvest soups, vegan ice cream and protein bites arrive ready-to-eat , while the smoothies, bowls and flatbreads require very minimal prep. Flatbreads just need a few minutes in the oven, for instance, while a Daily Harvest smoothie requires only a spin in the blender with almond milk, oat milk, cow’s milk or water and the harvest and oat bowls are simply heated and mixed before eating. Though the instructions on the cartons suggest using the microwave for bowls and some of the other Daily Harvest meals, I much preferred using a skillet or saucepan whenever possible.

My Favorite Smoothies Include:

  • Carrot and cinnamon this one was surprisingly delicious! It tasted like carrot cake to me.
  • Chocolate and Hazelnut This smoothie is so decadent! Its thick and chocolaty and is like drinking a milkshake.
  • Blueberry and chocolate. This one also is rich and chocolatey.
  • Strawberry and peach smoothie My youngest daughter loves this one. Its sweet, refreshing, and very kid-friendly.
  • Cucumber and greens This smoothie tastes like healthy green juice. I love green smoothies and juices, so this was right up my alley.
  • Banana and greens smoothie is a delicious green smoothie that is more sweet and creamy because of the banana. This smoothie would work nicely for a beginner green smoothie drinker.
  • My least favorite smoothies are the cold brew varieties. I found them difficult to blend. They also had a strong coffee flavor that didnt appeal to me.

You can prepare thicker smoothies or smoothie bowls by using less liquid.

Daily Harvest Chia Bowl Review

The Daily Harvest Chia Bowls are a lot like the smoothies in my mind: I initially thought, oh, I can just make that at home for a lot cheaper. And then I tried the Daily Harvest version, and I was blown away! For starters, each bowl is packed with a lot of ingredients that I will never actually source and use at home So these bowls are full of more nutrients and flavor than Ill make in a typical boring chia bowl recipe of chia + liquid + banana

How to prepare a Daily Harvest Chia Bowl:

This requires thinking ahead, because you need to add liquid the night before: just add ½ cup of a milk of your choice , leave it to soak in the fridge overnight , and then stir and eat.

Best Daily Harvest Chia Bowls:

There are only three of them at the time that Im writing this, and theyre all so tasty! The Blackberry + Majik is my favorite because its a little tangy from the cherries, and I love the fun blue color!

Its a meal delivery service that makes it easy to eat more fruits and vegetables every day. Everything is shipped to your door, completely frozen and ready to eat with just a few minutes of prep. Everything comes packed in dry ice and Ive never once had issues with anything melting and Ive been using the service for nearly 7 years!

All of their items are gluten-free, dairy-free, and plant-based and 95% of their ingredients are organic. They never use gums, preservatives or artificial anything.

You can choose a plan of 9, 14, or 24 items that come weekly or monthly for your first box, and then anywhere between 6-26 items per box following that. Daily Harvest is extremely flexible. You can skip deliveries whenever you want, add or remove items, and change box sizes. Their app makes it super easy to manage and ensure you dont get anything you dont want! My full review and my favorites from their collections are below. I also shared a few items I wouldnt order again.

In short, Daily Harvest smoothies, flatbreads and scoops are delicious.

The smoothies and flatbreads add more variety to my eating lifestyle, take a little stress off me from prepping all my meals, and help me get fruit and veggies no matter what is going on in my day. The scoops are a sweet way to end the day without making me feel sick like so many ice creams do. .

Who Daily Harvest Meal Kits Aren’t Good For

If you’re trying to go high protein or are the carnivorous type, Daily Harvest meals may not be a good pick for you. While a lot of the smoothies and bowls get a protein punch from things like lentils, beans and kale and most are all chock-full of vitamins and antioxidants, there are no meats, fish or alt-meats to be found in these Daily Harvest containers.

Daily Harvest is not great for kids. Now take this with a grain of salt, because every kid has different tastes, but the Daily Harvest flavor profiles tend to skew toward an older audience, in my opinion. With spices like turmeric and lots of hearty, sometimes bitter veggies and greens, it just may not be ideal for the youngsters in your squad. This is probably less true of certain meals like fruit smoothies, cacao protein bites and cinnamon oat bowls.

How Does Daily Harvest Compare To Other Subscription Companies

From our understanding, Daily Harvest is striving to compete against two separate industries: premade smoothies and meal subscription services. How does it stack up?

Pricewise, Daily Harvest smoothies come in on the expensive side. The smoothies cost between $7 – $8 each, compared to about $5.00 for premade Evolution smoothies at Starbucks. While this seems expensive at first glance, you might still save money because you wont waste ingredients at home. Many Daily Harvest smoothies include ingredients that could be difficult to track down in grocery stores, especially at the quantity they contain.

Regarding other smoothie subscription services, we found that Daily Harvest Smoothies seems to have three primary competitors: GreenBlender, HungryRoot, and Splendid Spoon. Lets see how these three compare to each other.

GreenBlender smoothies werent taking new subscriptions at the time of writing, but this subscription smoothie company costs approximately $4.90 per 12-ounce serving. Their weekly plan costs $49 per box, which provides ten smoothie servings. This company offers fresh or powdered ingredients , meaning that youll need to add ice to make them chilled.

HungryRoot meals are similar to the non-smoothie options at Daily Harvest, and they offer opportunities for plant-based, nutrient-dense dishes that can be made quickly. Some assembly is required for these foods, but you wont have to do much, if any, cooking.

First Let’s Talk About The Ingredients

As a nutritionist, the first thing I look at on a label is the ingredients list. I always make sure that the list is full of ingredients I can pronounce and understand. I also like to think logically about what the ingredients should and should not be listed for an item I’m buying. For example, there is no reason why high fructose corn syrup and a laundry list of other ingredients should be in my peanut butter: it should simply be peanuts and maybe a bit of salt, but that’s it. Since ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, I always take a look at the three first ingredients to make sure they are a whole food that I’m familiar with.

With that being said, ingredients were the first standout for me when analyzing the Daily Harvest items. The majority of the ingredients used are organic, and I really like that the meals are frozen. A lot of us associate frozen foods with tons of sodium and preservatives, but when done right, frozen foods can even be more nutritious than fresh. Frozen produce in general is often flash frozen directly after harvest or preparation, and this helps to lock in nutrients that fresh foods may gradually lose when in transit to the grocery store. Daily Harvest works directly with farms to source nourishing ingredients and freeze produce within 24 hours of harvest to lock in nutrients and flavor.

Daily Harvest

If my life were an episode of Top Chef, it wouldn’t exist because I’d be eliminated before the first round. My cooking skills can best be described as “knows how to fry an egg and little else.” Luckily, I live in New York City, where you can eat at a new restaurant every night of the week, or order delicious food delivery via Seamless on nights in. I was okay with spending all my money on eating out because food is one of my greatest joys in life. It still is. But now that I’ve been at home, I’ve developed an entirely new relationship with it. Food used to be the thing I would wait for with bated breath, lovingly twirl onto my fork , then enjoy in bliss. Now it’s something I have to…make? Needless to say, I was feeling as lost and helpless as Joe Exotic’s supposed husband after Joe was sent to jail. I was suddenly untethered, unmoored, lost at sea in my kitchen with no idea what to do or where to begin. I wanted to follow recipes but didn’t have the majority of the things required for themor the patience to make them. I wanted healthy, flavorful food that didn’t take long to make and was easy to prepare. But it seemed impossible.

How To Prepare Daily Harvest Flatbreads:

  • Place baking sheet on center rack of your oven or toaster oven and preheat to 450°F.
  • Unwrap and remove Flatbread from base. Place frozen Flatbread on preheated baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until edges are a deep golden brown.
  • Cool 1-2 minutes and enjoy!
  • So far my favorite flatbread has been the sweet potato + kale. Sweet potato is actually the crust of the flatbread instead of a topping and its soooo good! I was really impressed with this one.

More protein: The flatbreads are filling enough for lunch for me, especially when paired with a side salad, but you could also add some extra protein on top. A little grilled chicken or a few chickpeas would be perfect.

I have been getting monthly and sometimes biweekly Daily Harvest boxes for almost three years now. I started outsourcing some of my cooking when I was pregnant with my second daughter and in the throes of all-day nausea and food aversions. All I ever wanted was smoothies and veggies , but I often didnt have all the ingredients on hand to make something really nutritious and actually tasty. Theres just something about a kale, blueberry and almond milk smoothie that loses its appeal REAL QUICK.

Enter Daily Harvest I was impressed with their organic and fresh ingredient sourcing and minimal plastic packaging. The cups are made from recyclable paper and weve turned the plastic lids into fun craft projects for the kids. When youre buying individual frozen fruits and veg, they come in larger plastic bags. While I could easily make my own frozen fruit pieces, the whole point of ordering a box is convenience. I cook 95% of my meals at home and rarely eat out so a little help with three kids is greatly appreciated!

I was immediately impressed with their smoothie flavors and interesting functional ingredients like wild pine pollen , MCT oil, ashwaghanda , sachi plant protein, and camu camu among many other interesting ingredients you likely wouldnt source yourself!

    Cooking Daily Harvest Offerings: Novice

    Daily Harvest smoothies

Despite my lack of cooking skills, I managed to prepare each food item without difficulty . The instructions are simple and concise, and most items can be prepared using a blender or microwave. For smoothies, you can simply add water, juice, or milk to the pre-packaged ingredients and then blend. The various harvest and forager bowls can be popped into the microwave. The flatbreads go in the oven, and then items like the oat and chia bowls just have to sit in the fridge overnight once mixed. The scoops need to be left out of the freezer for about 10 minutes to thaw enough to scoop, but then you can dive in. Overall, I think these snacks and dishes were extremely user-friendly, so novice chefs should not be intimidated at all!
