They add a hearty, nutty flavor, and extra fiber. For this citrus smoothie, I cheated just a little and used pineapple packaged in 100% fruit juice. It has a bit more sugar than fresh pineapple, but I like the convenience. If you are a purist, by all means use fresh pineapple.
