How To Make Smoothies Thicker

Youll notice in a lot of my smoothie recipes that I opt to use frozen fruit rather than ice. While ice is nice in adding instant chill and bulk to smoothies, Ive found that it makes them too watery .

Instead, I like to freeze fruit and throw that into the smoothie to make it thicker and more frosty. In this Strawberry Banana Smoothie, were using frozen strawberries for their convenience and cost efficiency, but you can also peel, chop, and freeze your bananas ahead of time for smoothies. I like to do this with my soon-to-go-bad bananas to give them a second shot at life.

  • Strawberries: Fresh of frozen work here. You can also substitute blueberries or blackberries!

Health Benefits Of Smoothie

An everyday smoothie can be a super convenient way to obtain your fruits and veggies. And also nourishing your body with many crucial vitamins and minerals. The suggestion is to maximize those benefits by focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods while avoiding added sugars as much as possible. Similarly, the average Orange Julius smoothie offers high-carb, low-fat, and high-sugar nutritional profiles. You can enjoy small sizes of fruity drinks and should anticipate expending between 200 and 300 calories and at least 50 grams of carbs and sugars each. As we all know how much the orange Julius is beneficial for our skin also. Drinking orange juice daily can do a lot for your skin. Orange juice is dripping with antioxidants and, most significantly, vitamin C that plays a crucial role in fighting free radical activity. The free radical activity could make your skin dull and also promote wrinkles and aging.

You Should Never Add Orange Juice To Your Smoothie Here’s Why

strawberry

Smoothies came on the scene in the 1960s, and now the U.S. is the largest consumer of these convenient meal replacements . Over the years, the list of ingredients in smoothies has grown, while the health boost has decreased. Some smoothie chains, like Tropical Smoothie Cafe, do still use real fruit, while other chains, like Jamba Juice, have been said to rely heavily on juice blends.

According to Healthline, a standard smoothie contains a base ingredient and a liquid, with most people choosing between fruit, green, or protein smoothies. Any combination of ingredients can be used, depending on an individual’s health goals and restrictions. While smoothies do have the potential to increase your consumption of fruits, vegetables, and fiber, more often, they also contain hidden sugars, like those found in orange juice. Like many things, drinking orange juice comes with pros and cons, but if you’re interested in creating a healthier smoothie, it’s best to steer clear of the juice.

How To Thicken A Smoothie

Creamsicle Smoothie – Strawberry Banana Fruit Smoothie Recipe | RadaCutlery.com

There isnt just one right smoothie thickness. I personally like thick smoothies, but my kids like their smoothies a thinner consistency.

Thinning a smoothie is easy. Just add more liquid or yogurt. But thickening a smoothie without changing the flavor too much can be a bit tricky.

It can be frustrating to blend up a smoothie that is too thin for your liking. Here are the best ways I know how to thicken a smoothie .

  • Add a vegetable. Spinach and kale are my favorite vegetables to add to a smoothie. Some other ideas in order of most mild tasting, include celery, cauliflower, cucumber, and carrot. Avocado will also thicken it and add a creamy factor.
  • Scoop in some protein powder. I add a scoop of vegan protein powder to virtually every smoothie recipe I make.
  • Sprinkle in seeds. Flaxseed and chia seed are known for their thickening properties. Or try hemp, sesame, or sunflower seeds.
  • Toss in some nuts. Cashews and almonds are my favorite, but try peanuts, pecans, and walnuts. Be warned, walnuts add a little bitterness to the smoothie so add them carefully.
  • Try a nut butter. Peanut butter isnt the only option. Almond butter, cashew butter, sunflower butter, and macadamia nut butter will thicken as well.
  • Add a grain. Use grains that are cooked before adding to the smoothie. Rolled oats is the exception. Some grain ideas are oatmeal , rice, millet, and quinoa.

Orange Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Weve had quite a few school-free days lately, which I have been loving for a few reasons.

1. Sometimes you just need a day in which you dont HAVE to go anywhere.

2. There is actually time to have a real breakfast.

And what do my kids ask for on a daily basis? Smoothies. My kids love smoothies. Its actually one of the only healthy things that they do love.

So Im always trying to come up with new ones that they will like and eat and that has healthy things in it.

This was made simply from ingredients that we almost always have on hand: orange juice, frozen strawberries and bananas and ice. So simple, but super tasty. Fresh versions of either of the fruit will work as well.

Why It’s A Bad Idea To Add Orange Juice To Your Smoothie

An orange, strawberry, banana smoothie sounds delicious. All it would take is a banana, strawberries, and some orange juice . But, adding orange juice won’t add beneficial fiber to the mix, and you’ll crank up the carb and sugar count, according to Eat This, Not That!

Studies have shown orange juice to be nutritionally similar to a whole orange, according to Healthline, with some important differences. Orange juice has almost no fiber, while an orange has 3 grams. Orange juice contains nearly two times the calories and sugar as a fresh orange. And, drinking orange juice can cause blood sugar to rise along with the scale. If that is not enough to convince you, don’t even get us started on how orange juice can mess with your taste buds in the morning, but it has something to do with the combination with toothpaste!

Tips For Making This Orange Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Here are a few of my favorite tips for making this smoothie creamy and delicious:

  • Use frozen strawberries and banana if possible as theyll help keep the smoothie cold and thick. Sometimes ice doesnt blend as well, so its best to skip unless absolutely necessary. If you only have fresh fruit, try adding 1 cup frozen cauliflower as it blends much easier than ice.
  • Dont be afraid to add more liquid if your smoothie is too thick or wont fully blend. High powered blenders tend to blend frozen fruit much better, so if you have a regular or personal size blender, you may need to add more milk.
  • Start the blender on low speed, then gradually increase the speed to high to help blend all ingredients. End with the blender on low speed.
