Banana Strawberry Soy Smoothie
- 1/2 cup plain regular or nondairy yogurt
- 1 cup regular or nondairy milk
- 1/2 banana
Blend together until smooth. If youre looking for a thicker consistency, add a few ice cubes before blending.
What If I Dont Like Bananas
Bananas are the backbone of my simple smoothie recipes to me, they add so much creaminess and natural sweetness for an affordable price. But, if theyre not your thing, you can add some Greek yogurt with a sweetener and ice, OR do half an avocado with a sweetener and ice. Those two combos will replace a banana nicely in a smoothie and still give you a rich, creamy texture.

Is It Healthy To Have A Smoothie For Breakfast
Smoothies can make a healthy breakfast if you have a good balance of ingredients and nutrientsincluding protein, carbs, and healthy fats. Smoothies that heavily rely on veggies over fruit instantly cut down on sugar and increase the fiber content. You also want to avoid adding a lot of fruit juice and sweeteners, like syrups and honey, to limit the sweet stuff. Adding yogurt and protein powder helps make smoothies more filling, so youll stay satisfied longer. Just be sure to choose powders that have little to no added sugar and have zero artificial ingredients.
The liquid bases you use in your smoothie also play a big role. Skip fruit juices, which are packed with sugar and lack protein and fat, and go for low-fat milk or an unsweetened, non-dairy milk alternative, like almond, coconut, or cashew. Some non-dairy milks have less protein than cows milk, but they offer healthy fats to keep you satiated.
What Are Common Types Of Smoothies
If you want to freestyle, consider the types of smoothies that are already big hits. Weâd put them into the following categories: berry smoothies , nutty smoothies , chocolate smoothies , and green smoothies .Home from the gym and craving a nutrient-rich smoothie as a healthy breakfast? While throwing together a smoothie is super quick and easy, I totally understand the need to plan ahead and streamline things as much as possible.

What Do You Put In A Breakfast Smoothie
- Healthy Fats. Your favorite nut butter, coconut milk, or chia seeds. This makes the smoothie more satisfying and keeps you full between meals. Keep portions in mind I usually add about 1 tablespoon.
- Protein and Fiber Additions. Greek yogurt or your favorite protein powder are easy ways to make breakfast protein smoothies. A tablespoon of oatmeal adds fiber.
- Fruit. Breakfast fruit smoothies are always a crowd-pleasing choice. Strawberries and blueberries are my go-tos. Bananas make smoothies naturally sweet. Mango and pineapple can hide the taste of greens. Unexpected fruits like apples or watermelon can be scrumptious too.
- Vegetables. Spinach, kale, avocado, carrots, and even beets can all be added to smoothies.
- Flavor Additions. Vanilla, cinnamon, honey, maple syrup, and dates are all excellent ways to give your smoothie more flavor.
- Liquid. Unsweetened almond milk is my favorite for smoothies. You can also use juice , a different kind of milk, coconut water, or even plain water.

Keeping The Ingredients Minimal But Flavourful
My biggest piece of advice is to keep it simple!
Pick 1-3 fruits to add, maybe a leafy green such as spinach and then your liquid and protein source. That’s it!
Don’t make it harder on yourself by going out and spending all this money on fish oil, fresh turmeric, etc and then have a smoothie where you don’t enjoy the taste very much or you’ve spent $100 on ingredients and have turned it into a complicated process. Sometimes the healthiest foods are the simplest foods.

More Tips On Making Smoothies
As you can see, theres a grand variety of foods that can be used to make nutrient rich, healthy smoothies or smoothie bowls. The key is to use those that help you meet your nutritional needs and satisfy your personal tastes. And feel free to be creative with your fruit and vegetable choices, for greater variety.
I also recommend being careful with sweeteners such as honey, coconut sugar or agave, since these do have calories and have the same net effect in the body as regular sugar. I prefer to let the fruits own sugar sweeten the smoothie up.
Here, I include a smoothie recipe I frequently prepare since its easy, quick, and most importantly, my kids love it!

Can Smoothies Replace A Meal
If its a well balanced smoothie with a good amount of protein, fiber and healthy fats you can absolutely use it as a meal replacement. I aim for around 400-500 calories and at least 12-15 grams of protein if Im having a smoothie as a meal. See my protein shake recipes to get some ideas.
I like to enjoy a smoothie for breakfast or a snack, but it usually isnt filling or satisfying enough for me for lunch or dinner. This strawberry banana smoothie is a great snack option because its less than 200 calories and has 7 grams of protein!
Ive also found that smoothie bowls are more filling for me. I like to top them with things to chew and eat the smoothie with a spoon. The process of eating with a spoon and having something to chew makes my brain register the smoothie as a meal and it feels more satisfying. New to smoothie bowls? Try this healthy smoothie bowl as a starter recipe and then try my acai bowl or dragon fruit smoothie bowl.
