  • Watermelon– You can buy pre-cubed watermelon so you dont have to cut a thing. Freeze the cubed watermelon for at least 4 hours so it gets nice and solid. We like to always have some watermelon always in the freezer so we can whip up a smoothie anytime the craving hits.
  • Lime Juice– Fresh squeezed juice is always best but bottled juice will work as well. Using bottled juice will also make this drink super fast to put together. We love short cuts!
  • Honey– A little bit of honey enhances the natural sweetness of the watermelon. If your watermelon is extra sweet, you can skip the honey but we love the depth and flavor it adds to the drink.

There are a few ways to switch up this drink, adding different ingredients to tweak it but we will talk about that later. You really only need these three things to make an incredible watermelon smoothie. So now, on to how to put the whole thing together.

How Long Does Watermelon Last

Imagine you happened to buy a large watermelon, which your family couldnt finish all at once. Usually, wed stock the leftovers in the fridge, but how do you know when it will expire?

Like any other fruit, watermelon does go bad. However, theres a difference between storing it whole versus in smaller slices.

Uncut watermelons can last 7-10 days on the counter, and up to 3 weeks in the fridge. Its recommended to avoid leaving watermelon at room temperature for more than 2 days as its prone to drying out very quickly.

Every watermelon has its own shelf life depending on when its picked from the vine. Therefore, each of them has a different storing period the earlier its picked, the longer it will last under proper preservation.

Watermelon Smoothie Recipe: Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Almond Milk. you can also use coconut water, lite coconut milk, etc.
  • Frozen strawberries. You can use fresh strawberries, but in order to make a smoothie that’s thick and cold I suggest freezing them first.
  • Vanilla extract. you can use vanilla bean paste or omit if desired. However, if you’re going for the creamsicle flavor definitely use vanilla!
  • Frozen Banana. Adding frozen banana to smoothies is my favorite way to sweeten a recipe and impart a creamy texture. Using frozen banana means that you don’t need to add ice to make it thick and cold.
  • Lemon juice. I like the splash of acidity in this smoothie to cut through the sweetness of the watermelon. Lime juice is a good substitute too.

How Long Is It Good For:

Serve: Serve it within 30 minutes of making it.

Store: Leftover will keep in an airtight container for up to 24 hours.

Freeze: I like to freeze individual servings of smoothie in freezer-safe Ziploc bags. The night before, just pop them in the fridge, and in the morning, your smoothie will be ready for you!

Sweetness – we find that the sweetness from watermelon is enough. However, when we first drank this in Barcelona, as they add tons of ice, they also added a lot of sugar. That makes it unhealthy.

If you want to add some sweetness, we recommend adding maple syrup or agave syrup. These are natural sweeteners and have a lower glycemic index than sugar.
