The Secret To A Great Tasting Green Smoothie Recipe

How to Make a Superfood Green Smoothie that Tastes Good! Nutritarian & Vegan

After a lot of trial and error, I have discovered that adding acid fruits and healthy fats to your green smoothie is what makes a green smoothie taste fantastic! I know adding fats to foods can be scary for many people, so lets start with the fruit.

When adding fruit to a green smoothie, it is best to use acid and sub-acid fruits rather than sweet fruits. Yes, you can still make a green smoothie taste good using sweet fruits, and just make sure you add some acid or sub-acid fruit to cut the green taste.

Sweet fruits will make your smoothie sweet, but they will do nothing to counter the green taste. Acid and sub-acid fruits and fats used in the proper combinations will make your smoothie taste so good you will forget that greens are in it!

Sweet Potatoes Or Yarms

Much like pumpkin, sweet potatoes are a great way to add sweetness and extra nutrients to your smoothie without relying on fruit. Theyre an excellent source of fiber, vitamins and minerals, and their natural sweetness means you wont need to add any extra sugar. They also are a great way to thicken a smoothie.

What Do I Use To Sweeten A Smoothie

All of these smoothies here use frozen fruit as a base, which adds a nice baseline of sweetness that you can build on if your tastebuds would like. My recommendation is to blend up your smoothie without any added sweetener, then taste. Add in honey or maple syrup to taste. Many times, I dont need to add anything! Another great natural option for sweetening: pitted Medjool dates. Throw in one or two of those bad boys and let the blender do its thing. Youd be amazed at how sweet your smoothie will be!

How To Make A Smoothie Taste Good

  • Putting at least one frozen element in a smoothie dramatically improves the taste. Im not a room-temperature smoothie girl either.
  • Pineapple is pretty dang awesome in a smoothie. Weve started using frozen pineapple to replace the frozen strawberries in our morning smoothies. It sweetens really well, and it covers up a lot of the bitterness from greens, if you happen to be using kale.
  • Adding an acidic element helps to brighten the flavors. Pineapple does a good job here, but a squirt of lime, a splash of pomegranate or orange juice would work, too!
  • Do the kids like it? Mostly.

A couple of the kids would still rather have a smoothie store smoothie than anything we make here, but will still drink it if it isnt green.

They also used to dip pieces of ham in maple-sweetened yogurt, so I wouldnt trust their judgment.

Can I Use This Smoothie For A Cocktail

This is one of my favorite questions because the answer is YES! The simplicity and sweetness of this smoothie make it a perfect base for a summer cocktail. Add shot of rum or tequila and serve it blended with ice or on the rocks. You can also turn it into a fancy tropical mimosa by blending it half and half with prosecco or cava. Its great addition to the bar at a bridal shower.

    Add Vanilla Or Almond Drops

5 Healthy Smoothies That Taste Good

This is a trick that many physique competitors use when prepping for an event. Because theyre super-strict with their calorie intake, they have to be creative with their recipes. Adding a drop of vanilla or almond extract is an effective way to add flavour to a smoothie without sugar.

Although there are specialist health products out there, you can save yourself some money with the supermarket alternatives. Youll find them in the baking aisle with other cake ingredients.

They do contain sugar but since you only need a drop, it hardly adds any calories. If weight management is your goal then this is a decent option.

Use Other Fruits To Sweeten A Recipe

If your green smoothie is tasting that bit too plant-based then try sweetening it with more fruit instead. Of course, sugar is still sugar but the fibre in fruit means your body digests it more slowly. As a result, you dont get the sugar rush or GI spike which can cause hunger pangs afterward.

Try incorporating new fruits into your recipes and avoid getting stuck in a rut. Adding a nectarine, strawberries, or pear can add varying levels of sweetness at different times of the year.

Drinking a daily green smoothie is what helped me get the body and energy to do some incredible things, such as run 47 miles of the Grand Canyon, ride motorcycles through Morocco, publish two best-selling recipe books and create a backyard garden for my kids.

This daily habit has kept my kids healthy when we didn’t have health insurance, energized us in between school and sports and nourished us so we rarely get sick. And when we do, we can usually bounce back with some of my own natural remedies. My kids started drinking green smoothies when they were 2 years old. Now, they’re teenagers and still drink them.

When I created this recipe…it changed my life in more ways than I ever imagine. It was love at first sip for me, my two kids and over 1 million others who were scared of spinach smoothies. I’ve published an entire green smoothie cookbook and went on The Doctors TV Show to blend live on stage!

    Expert Tips And Tricks

    • Skip the bananas. An avocado can be substituted for a banana along with a tablespoon or two of sweetener.
    • Go for the goat yogurt. If youre slightly lactose intolerant, goats milk yogurt is a wonderful alternative that tastes very similar to cows milk yogurt.
    • Add and adjust. Start by adding a little bit of optional ingredients and then taste after each addition to make sure you still like the flavor!
    • Sweeten it last. Youd be surprised how sweet fruit can be! Wait until the end to stir in any additional sweeteners.
    • Pay attention to the blade. You want to add your softer ingredients closer to the blade and the harder ingredients further away from the blade for easier blending.

How To Make Your Smoothies Taste Better – Top 5 Smoothie Hacks

To get rid of the earthy flavour that you are not enjoying, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract, which will mask the flavour and only add about 12 calories. Next time you make your smoothie, remember that there are certain greens that are just naturally bitter and dont make for good smoothie ingredients.

Greens like mustard greens, dandelion greens, and broccoli rabe can give your smoothie a dirt-like flavour. Choose greens with milder flavours, like spinach, swiss chard, or curly kale. Beet greens also work well, and bring the sweetness of beets along. If you dont like too many greens, try adding baked sweet potato, pumpkin puree, cucumber, carrots, or cooked beets.
