Fruit and veggie smoothies for kids that have been tried and tested by my kids. Drinking veggies is not a bad idea, particularly for picky kids, well for anyone really.

Now that we know we should be aiming for 8-10 servings of fruit and veggies in a day, I think having them in a smoothie is not a bad idea.

Now that we know we should be aiming for 8-10 servings of fruit and veggies in a day, I think having them in a smoothie is not a bad idea.

When it comes to smoothies for kids, and for anyone for that matter, I think we should be mindful of portion size.

Smoothies can be quite a concentrated source of energy, which isnt necessarily a problem if we think about them as a meal or snack, but if we just drink them alongside our full meals we could be inadvertently taking in quite a bit of extra energy.

For kids this may not be a problem if they are burning it all off, but I am sure you can see where I am coming from.

Water is still going to be the best bet for kids drinks for hydration, but smoothies can be a great healthy snack, that just happens to be a drink!

Can I Make This With Greek Yogurt

You can make this yogurt smoothie with Greek yogurt if you prefer. The result will be slightly thicker, but it will also contain more protein. Try it both ways and see what you thinkand if your toddler has a thickness preference!

TIP: We love this strawberry yogurt smoothie without banana as an easy option if youre out or if you have a banana allergy in the house.

Smoothies For Toddlers With Food Allergies

If your toddler has food allergies, its easy to adjust a smoothie for them. If they are allergic to bananas, use 2 tablespoons avocado instead or try a teaspoon or two of nut butter. Use whichever type of milk you preferalmond, flax, coconut, rice, dairy, or even kefir.

We tend to use Silk Protein Nut Milk, Ripple Milk, or New Karma Flaxmilk in our smoothies.

Banana Cream Pie Smoothie

Banana cream pie is a sweet treat and this smoothie inspired by the dessert is thick and creamy. The trick to this smoothie recipe is frozen bananas. They give the smoothie its texture and thickness instead of ice. Just like a banana cream pie, this recipe also calls for a few vanilla wafer cookies. They will absorb the other ingredients and become soft, as they do in the dessert. This recipe makes one serving.

The recipe is available from Baker by Nature.

5 Fruit Smoothie Recipes Your Kids Will Love

Depending on the age and preference of your child, there are a few ways to serve a smoothie that they may like.

  • A reusable pouch can be a great option for babies 7 months and older into toddlerhood.
  • You can also serve this to a baby on a spoon. For toddlers over about 18 months, you can try a small open cup with a straw.
  • You could also do a straw cup (you may need to thin the smoothie a little with water depending on the width of the straw.

TIP: If your child doesnt care for smoothies, try serving small portions a few different ways to see if they prefer one drinking method over another.

How To Make A Smoothie

Making smoothies is very simple and takes roughly 5 minutes from start to finish.

  • Add Ingredients: Place all of your ingredients into a blender.
  • Blend: Press the smoothie button on your blender or start on low speed and increase to high speed for 2-3 minutes. Do not under blend, you want all of the pieces of fruit and veggies completely smoothie,
  • Add More: Add more milk or liquid if the smoothie is too thick. I have found that toddlers and kids like a thinner consistency of smoothies since it is easier to drink out of a straw.
  • Drink: Pour into a cup with a lid and serve.

A classic strawberry smoothie includes fresh, red strawberries combined with yogurt and milk and blended for just a minute or two. This slight variation will quickly become a family favorite, especially among younger children who will love the bright pink mixture. It can be made with frozen or fresh strawberries and can also be garnished with more fresh strawberries. The mixture can also be blended and then frozen for serving later.

    A Smoothie Without Banana

I think what makes this smoothie really special is that its not sweetened with bananas. Sometimes you just want a smoothie without that noticeable banana flavor. Thats why I use dates in this smoothie, instead.

I love adding dates to smoothies, especially for my kids, because they are a surprising and have so much fiber that they wont impact blood sugar levels the way something with a similar sugar content might. If you happen to be pregnant or know someone who is, dates may also help you have a better labor and delivery experience.

Tips For Making And Serving Smoothies

Blending up and serving a smoothie to your kids is a great way to introduce them to eating healthier. However, if you want to inspire them to make this way of eating a habit, get them involved in the process.

“Asking your kids to help out is a fun activity that gets them involved in the kitchen,” says Rachel Berman, RD, and General Manager of Verywell. “Kids can help pick out the ingredients and have fun watching them get blended together.” You can even play a game with it: Can your kids guess what the main color of the smoothie will be? Berman says it can also be a good idea to repeatedly serve a little bit of the whole fruit/vegetable alongside the smoothie, like a few slices of strawberries, as a “garnish” that they will eventually want to eat on its own.

Lainey Younkin, MS, RD, LDN, dietitian at Lainey Younkin Nutrition and mom says getting your kids involved in making food means they are more likely to eat it, or in this case drink it. “Smoothies are fun for kids because they can choose their favorite fruits and vegetables or choose which colors they want to mix togetherit’s like a mini science experiment,” she adds. For a nutritious smoothie, she recommends protein, fiber, healthy fat and a healthy liquid like milk or water.
