How We Tested And Picked

How to Make the Best Smoothies with the Perfect Blend! | VAT19

We’ve tested more than 30 different blenders across various categories including high-speed blenders, personal blenders, protein shakers and juicers. First, we evaluated their design, safety features , weight, materials that make up their jars and the design of their blades. Next, we took into account any instructions in the manual for any tips like how to order smoothie ingredients.

Then we got blending. In each machine, we blended up a few different smoothies including all-fruit smoothies and one with a tough green like kale to evaluate the power of the motor and sharpness of the blades. For each smoothie, we noted consistency and how uniform the blend was. We also noted how long each smoothie took to blend and whether or not we needed to use a tamp to combine ingredients.

Finally, we cleaned each blender by hand using this method: Add some dish soap and water to your blender jar, replace on the base and turn on to a low setting until the soap begins to foam. Rinse, and your blender jar is clean. Lastly, we noted whether any parts were dishwasher safe.

Fruit Smoothie Vs Green Smoothie Vs Meal Replacement Smoothie

Green smoothies are all the rage now. To make a green smoothie you simply add leafy greens to a fruit smoothie.

If you want to make a fruit smoothie then just use fresh or frozen fruit and a liquid. If you want to make a green smoothie then you would add one of the popular greens listed below.

Keep in mind that the sweeter the fruit then the more sugar it will contain so try to avoid adding any sweeteners like maple syrup or stevia if you are doing a fruit smoothie.

Also, a typical fruit smoothie can hide the taste of greens and vegetables so you might as well make it a green smoothie to get the extra health benefits.

Fruit Smoothie = Liquid + Fruit + Boost

Green Smoothie = Liquid + Fruit + Boost + Leafy Greens

Meal Replacement Smoothie = Liquid + Fruit + Boost + Leafy Green + Healthy Carb *

Are Frozen Fruit Smoothies Healthy

Frozen fruit smoothies are relatively healthy as frozen fruits still retain much of their nutritional value and taste. Many people prefer to get their daily intake of fruits and vegetables through smoothies because its so convenient and tasty. You should know that fruit smoothies can be high in sugar due to the natural sugar content in fruits. While smoothies are a convenient meal replacement, you should still try to eat fresh fruit and vegetables wherever you can.

Still Can’t Drink That Smoothie

Followed the fixes above, yet that smoothie still isnât drinkable? Check out the honorable mentions below for a little extra help :

  • Freezing fruits that act as part of the liquid: If fruits with a higher water content are added, then I lower the amount of liquid in the recipe since those fruits act as liquid + fiber. Freezing these fruits, then adding less liquid to blend can cause difficulty in blending since the ratio is off. Make sure to add a little extra liquid if using frozen âliquid fruits,â or use fresh, so they can act as the liquid needed to blend the perfect drink.
  • Adding the âkitchen sinkâ: This is a common mistake for beginner and veteran rawkstars. #greensmoothiefails One reason I chose the name SIMPLE Green Smoothies, is to remind us that keeping it simple almost always wins. Limit the superfood additions to one or two options, and focus on fruits that compliment each other. Follow the 1-1-1.5 method when making a new creation for the best possible outcome.
  • Leaving in the fridge for too long: Ever blend too much smoothie, or blend then leave for a little later? While a green smoothie is best consumed within 15 minutes of blending, it’s perfectly fine to consume 24 hours later . The problem comes when that smoothie sits in the refrigerator more than 24 hours⦠it starts to break down a bit more, and become undrinkable. Donât waste all those nutrients by forgetting to drink that delicious smoothie!

Do You Need A Special Blender To Make Smoothies

As I mentioned, sort of. You will either need a bullet blender or a jar blender. I dont advise that you use a stick blender.

Any hand blender is going to be lacking in design when it comes to smoothies. There are plenty of ways that you can use a stick blender .

But yes, as a rule youre going to need a special blender. One that has a container and also one thats powerful enough to blend up what you need blended.

But do you need a special blender? That word is kind of loaded. What exactly is a special blender? Is that some sort of magic blender that only makes smoothies? No, you just need a strong blender capable of blending up fruits and, if you want, vegetables.

Creating This Frozen Fruit Smoothie With Yogurt

I love smoothies. Theyre fast, easy, healthy, and refreshing. This one has just three ingredients but youd never know it based on how creamy, smooth, and satisfying it is.

I got the ingredients at Vons. Look for the new tag at your local Vons or Safeway stores to find new items like these at great values. I used Silk Unsweetened Cashewmilk, Silk Strawberry Dairy-Free Yogurt, and a frozen mixed berry blend of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries.

I love baking and making smoothies with Silk products because theyre so low in calories and fat, theyre vegan and dairy-free, and I always get impressive-tasting results.

Between the naturally sweet fruit and the strawberry yogurt, I didnt need to add sugar to the smoothie. Love it when that happens!

The recipe as written will serve two, and you can freeze the second portion for later. Or get creative and make frozen yogurt popsicles with it. However you try it, youre going to love it!

How To Make A Smoothie Bowl

If you like to eat your smoothie with a spoon instead of a straw, put it in a bowl and keep it thick.

The key to any smoothie bowl is a little amount of water, and either avocado or a clean protein powder in there to thicken it up, says Adler. Ice is great, but keep the water or liquid to ¼ cup at most! Youll need a powerful blender to make this happen.

Many people add whole berries or cut fruit on top of their smoothie bowls and then sprinkle them with chia seeds or chopped nuts. Adler recommends her recipe for a Green Smoothie Bowl, a hearty smoothie that can stand-in as a meal.

How To Blend A Smoothie

Once you gather and measure your ingredients, it’s time to blend! First, add the leafy greens, then liquid to your blender. Blend until there are no leafy chunks. Depending on your blender, this might take 10 seconds or 60.

Then add the remaining ingredients and blend again until smooth. If you want that refreshing smoothie to be cold, make sure at least 1 of your fruit ingredients is frozen.

I often boost my smoothies with plant based protein powder or superfoods to give my body the most benefit I can.

Pro smoothie tip: by adding protein + healthy fat to your smoothie, you can stay full longer + not get a sugar crash from the natural fruit sugar.

Start With The Liquid On The Bottom

Whether youre working with milk, a milk alternative, juice, or coconut water, this is always the first ingredient that you should start with, the Ninja experts say. This allows your blender to actually work its magic. The spinning of the blades creates a vortex, which sucks harder ingredients down into the little tornado being created in your blender.

Always Add The Liquid First

Filtered water, coconut water, and milk substitutes are the top choices Blender Babes recommends, followed by juice or regular milk.

This is because most fruit juices are high in unhealthy sugars and add unnecessary calories to your smoothie. .

Dependant upon your blender, the types of fruit and veggies you add, and whether the fruit is fresh or frozen, Blender Babes recommends using anywhere from 6 to 8 ounces of liquid for regular smoothies and 12 to 16 ounces of liquid for more green smoothie recipes.

Typically for highly green smoothies, meaning lots of leafy greens, or the more frozen fruit you use, the more liquid you will need.

Do You Have To Add Ice

Smoothie King shows how to blend up healthy drinks

No, ice cubes are not necessary to make a smoothie, as long as youre using frozen fruits. Replace 1:1 ice cubes to frozen fruit is recommended. The ice will create a smooth, thick, chilly texture, or frothy if only a small amount is used. I like to add both ice cubes and frozen fruit together to create the perfect consistency.

Add In Those Frozen Fruits

One of the best things about smoothies is that creamy texture that makes drinking them so pleasant, while your taste buds are busy enjoying the burst of flavors.

To achieve that perfect smoothie texture with all the right flavors, I often go for frozen fruits, instead of using fresh ones combined with ice.

Using 2 to 2 1/2 cups of frozen fruits prevents my smoothie from being watered down and losing the rich flavors in the process.

However, ice can still be helpful if your smoothie ends up a bit too thick, or otherwise a bit too sweet. Adding in 1 small cup of ice can easily solve those issues.

Also note that bananas and avocados can also make your smoothie thicker and creamier, if youre aiming for that creamier end result.

How To Make A Fruit Smoothie

Making a fruit smoothie is as simple as tossing ingredients in a blender and letting it rip, but we want to make sure you succeed every time, so heres our exact process:

  • Add liquid to your blender. I typically use unsweetened almond milk, but you could use any other kind of milk, fruit juice, or even just water.
  • Add in any fibrous foods. If you are adding in spinach or other greens, this is the time to toss them in.
  • Add in your frozen fruits and vegetables. I like to keep at least frozen bananas and frozen strawberries on hand for smoothie making. Any frozen fruit works!
  • Add any fresh fruits or veggies youd like to use. Here is where youll toss in fresh strawberries or an avocado half.
  • Top it off with your favorite nutrition mix-ins. Add protein powder, collagen, chia seeds, turmericwhatever youd like to boost the nutrition of the smoothie.
  • Blend away! I like to start my blender on low and then slowly ramp up to full speed. This makes sure everything is mixed well and the blades dont get stuck. I blend until the smoothie looks silky, and then I pour and enjoy.

Should You Peel A Beet Before Blending It

Technically you do not have to peel a beet, but I would suggest that you do.

Because a beet is a root vegetable, the skin tends to be dirty and get a lot of wear and tear.

Also, the skin of the beet is not more nutritious than the beetroot flesh.

That deep red interior that you see when you cut the beet open? Thats the good stuff.

Also, if you are not buying organic beets, then I would strongly advise you not to blend the skin.

When given the option, always choose an organic beet if you can. However, sometimes you dont have that option.

In those cases, peel the skin before blending.
