However, anytime you can enjoy a nourishing breakfast like this acai breakfast bowl that feels like youre eating an indulgent dessert, count me in!

While the açai bowls trend isnt new, previously Ive only posted a recipe for a blueberry acai smoothie bowl but never the ultimate base acai smoothie bowl. Which is what Im changing today!

Like many commercial food trends, a single bowl can be extremely pricey to buy in cafes. So instead, make this easy acai bowl recipe at home. Not only will you save some money, but you can adapt the acai breakfast bowl to personal taste! Best of all, this homemade acai bowl is an excellent way to start the day and it also takes just minutes to prepare and is super versatile with the plentiful add-ins and optional toppings!

Are Green Smoothies Healthy

This depends. If you decide to add loads of sugary yogurt, fruit juice, and tablespoons of nut butter, then perhaps your smoothie becomes more of a healthy-ish dessert rather than a feel-good snack.

Nevertheless, keep an eye on the sugars and all those extras and green smoothies are a magical way to give your body all the fuel it needs.

Dont Be Shy Of Your Greens

Want an extra boost of nutrition? Add in a handful of spinach or kale to quickly get that added nutritional value. It may alter the color of the bowl but will still taste amazing.

If you want to add in additional superfoods and arent a fan of greens, you can explore superfood powders. Cacao and pomegranate powders are great options for that.

Recipe Notes And Tips

  • Always add the liquid and soft ingredients to the blender first. Fortunately, my blender allows me to add everything at the same time , but I dont have to blend in stages. That said, should you have a less powerful blender, I recommend blending the yogurt, milk, and spinach first, followed by the frozen fruit, adding additional liquid as needed.
  • Before adding loads of added sugars , try your smoothie first especially if you added vanilla yogurt. Vanilla yogurt already comes loaded with lots of sugar, so between that and the fruit, it should be on the sweeter side.
  • Frozen fruit is better than ice. Do you love super thick, super cold smoothies? Add frozen fruit instead of ice. There is one exception- if you know you will be enjoying your smoothie right away, then a little ice is OK and wont risk watering down your smoothie.
  • If this is the first time youve ever made a smoothie, measure your ingredients at least roughly. The last thing you need is a smoothie without enough liquid that its impossible to blend.
  • Fresh spinach is best. Now, I have nothing against frozen spinach however when were talking smoothies, fresh tastes best. Somehow you can taste the difference.

    Is An Acai Bowl Healthy

There is some controversy over whether or not Acai Bowls are actually healthy. This is mainly due to Acai Bowls becoming popular and offered at some restaurants that might not be using the healthiest ingredients, or 100% pure acai in their Acai Bowls. Some store-bought Acai Bowls can also be very large, making them high in calories and sugar.

Homemade Acai Bowls, on the other hand, can always be made healthy. You can control the quality of ingredients you use, and make a reasonable-sized portion.

Acai bowls are packed with nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein and healthy fats, making them part of a healthy diet.

  • Process until the frozen mango and peaches are fully blended and the spinach is completely processed.
  • And more milk or yogurt as needed.
  • Leftovers will keep for about two days when stored in the refrigerator. There will be some natural separation, simply shake well before drinking.

The acai berry is a tropical fruit that hails from Brazil with major superfood properties. The berries contain a large seed that takes up about 80 percent of the fruit, but the edible flesh and skin are loaded with vitamins and nutrients. The acai berry is high in antioxidants, fiber, heart-healthy fats, and calcium. Those nutrients coupled with its delicious taste make this super fruit a popular ingredient in smoothie bowls, also known as acai bowls.

    The Benefits Of Aa Berries

Açai provides essential nutritional support for your bodys vital functions as it combines the potent antioxidants of berries with the healthy fats, fiber and protein of nuts. In fact, açais principal macronutrients are heart-healthy omegas, unsaturated fatty acids that are crucial in lowering blood cholesterol levels and the associated risk of heart disease. 100g of Wonderfruit Açai® packs contain over 4g of linoleic acid and oleic acid . Linoleic acid has the additional advantage of being an Essential Fatty Acid , that is, a fat that humans need but cannot synthesize, and must therefore be obtained through the diet.

How To Make The Aa Bowl Thick

Smoothie bowls are meant to be super thick and scoopable with a spoon! Using frozen fruit and a small amount of liquid will help ensure your smoothie bowl ends up nice and thick.

One thing to note is that thick smoothie bowls can be hard to make unless you have a high-powered blender with a tamper. The tamper is critical for pushing the ingredients around and you definitely need a machine that has power when youre working through this amount of frozen fruit. Ive found that my Vitamix blender works great for smoothie bowls like this one!

How To Make A Quick And Easy Classic Breakfast Acai Bowl:

First, youll need a high powered blender or a food processor to make this smoothie bowl. This 3.5 qt. KitchenAid food processor is my favorite kitchen appliance because it blends smoothie bowls better than my Nutribullet blender, takes up little space on the counter and is easy to clean. I use this small, but mighty food processor for all of my smoothie bowls and for making banana nice cream!

Dont skip this step! Run your packet of frozen acai puree under hot water to slightly thaw and break in half before opening. This step helps your acai puree get evenly distributed throughout the smoothie bowl and makes blending easier.

Next, add the thawed acai packet, frozen blueberries and frozen banana chunks to your blender or food processor. Drizzle a little pure maple syrup or honey for sweetness and sprinkle in some acai powder for an enhanced berry flavor. Finally, pour in a splash of non-dairy milk to help your ingredients blend smoothly.

Afterwards, give your blender or food processor a little break from blending and then blend again to make sure your acai bowl doesnt have any big chunks of frozen fruit left behind. Your classic breakfast acai bowl should be thick and creamy before you spoon it into a bowl and add any toppings.

ACAI BOWL TUTORIAL | 3 THICK SMOOTHIE BOWL RECIPES

While it may look like dessert, an acai bowl is actually a thick smoothie that’s made with a form of acai berry. In the U.S., you’re not likely to find whole acai berries instead, you can buy frozen acai puree, acai powder, and even acai sorbet. The frozen puree is probably the easiest one to find at local grocery stores, like Target and Walmart.

The smoothie bowls can be made solely with acai berries and your choice of liquid, or you can add other fruits of your choice like strawberries and bananas. Typically acai bowls are served topped with fruits, granola, peanut butter, or chocolate chips and enjoyed with a spoon, like a superfood ice cream.

The best part about acai bowls is that you can eat them literally anytime. They can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dessert. Just change up what you put on them and voilà, you have a new bowl every time.

Many specialty cafes and juice shops sell acai bowls, but they are super easy to make at home. So next time you have a hankering for something sweet that will keep you full and happy, try an acai bowl recipe.

What You Need For This Acai Bowl Recipe

    • unsweetened acai packets these packets are simply acai puree that has been frozen. I personally like the Sambazon brand and always buy the unsweetened variety. The sweetened packs have a lot of sugar added!
    • frozen banana be sure to freeze your bananas after theyve been peeled. You can freeze them in chunks or chop it into chunks after freezing. Frozen banana adds natural sweetness to the smoothie bowl and makes it thick and creamy. If you dont love bananas, you can use 1 cup frozen mango instead!
    • non-dairy milk I like to use unsweetened almond or oat milk, but you can use any type of milk you have on hand. You only need a little bit of liquid for this smoothie.
    • frozen mixed berries You can use whatever type of frozen berries you have on hand. I usually use a frozen berry blend, but using either frozen blueberries, strawberries or raspberries works great. You can also use fresh fruit, but frozen fruit does keep the smoothie bowl consistency thicker.
    • peanut butter look for a natural peanut butter where the only ingredients are peanuts and salt. You can also use a different type of nut or seed butter like almond or cashew butter.
    • vanilla or chocolate protein powder I recommend Nuzest protein powder. You can use my code eatingbirdfood for 15% off your order.

Added sweeteners: Some acai bowl recipes call for an added sweetener like honey or maple syrup, but I dont find that necessary here. The acai, banana and berries will make the bowl plenty sweet!

How To Blend A Smoothie Bowl

The second key is the blend. Unlike regular green smoothies that blend into a liquid fairly easily, smoothie bowls will remain thick in the blender, and might take a little muscle. This is my method for blending:

  • Add all the ingredients to the blender, then turn on high speed to start the blending process.
  • Once the ingredients stop moving on their own, use the tamper through the top to push down the fruit to engage the blade again. If you don’t have a tamper, then stop the machine and use a spoon/spatula to push the fruit back towards the blade and blend again. Be patient this can take a few minutes to get everything blended. Thick= good, so avoid adding extra liquid.
  • Once blended smoothly, scrape into bowls. Now, the fun part: adding the toppings.
  • How To Make The Best Acai Bowl

    Acai Smoothie Bowl using Welch
    • It all starts with Acai Berry Well be using freeze-dried acai powder which can be found in most health-conscious stores or ordered online . Frozen acai berry packets can also be used. You can find the packets at Target or your local grocery store in the freezer aisle with the frozen fruits.
    • Add in mixed berries and banana I like using a mix of frozen berries and one fresh or frozen banana. You can use any mixture of frozen berries you prefer. Even cherries would be great.
    • Protein Optionally, add a tablespoon of nut butter, hemp hearts, or chia seeds. Or use 1/2 scoop of your favorite protein powder.
    • The Liquids Blend it all together with unsweetened plant milk or water.
    • Toppings Customize your acai bowl with various toppings. Some of my favorites include sliced bananas, kiwi, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, goji berries, cocoa nibs, vanilla granola, coconut, chia seeds, etc

    Enjoy often!

I made this smoothie bowl with frozen acai packets, but you could also use acai powder. If you grab the frozen acai packets, make sure to get unsweetened. Theres no need for added sugar considering the sweetness of all the fruit.

  • Toss the acai into a high-powered blender and add a banana, some homemade cashew milk, a few tablespoons of homemade almond butter and collagen for protein goodness. But the beauty of acai bowls are how easily customizable they are, so feel free to tweak.
  • Once youve made your acai bowl comes the fun part the toppings! Add mixed berries, chia seeds, coconut flakes, hemp seeds, cacao nibs or anything else that add texture, crunch, protein or nutrients. Its your smoothie bowl so have fun with it.
