I could have a smoothie for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! This is such a great post

  • bakedbree 23 Sep 2012Reply

Then this is perfect for you Katrina!

  • Kara 10 Sep 2012Reply

A suggestion for the protein powder. I make a smoothie every morning, and I wound up ordering unflavored, unsweetened protein powder from trueprotein.com. I order 5lb at a time and it runs me about $7 a pound. Then I can just add whatever flavors, fruits, coco powder, etc., that I want and not worry about clashing flavors. I also like knowing that whats in my protein powder is just whey protein, no chemicals or artificial sweeteners or flavors.

  • bakedbree 23 Sep 2012Reply

Thanks Kara! That is just what we were looking for.

  • Jackie 23 Apr 2019Reply

I had the same problem but I wanted a plant based protein powder. My favorite is now Sun Warrior Warrior Blend. It comes in plain as well as vanilla & chocolate.

How do you thaw the fozen smoothies?

  • bakedbree 23 Apr 2019Reply

How To Prep Your Smoothies For The Week

If you follow this blog, you probably know were big fans of batch prepping meals to save time and money, and keep on track with healthy eating. But lately weve been into prepping our protein shakes, too.

Youve most likely seen the advertising on social media for pre-made deliver-to-your-door smoothies to make life easier. And while we think thats a super great idea, its not always affordable.

And, hey, why spend money when you dont have to? Because if you have a blender, an ice cube tray and 20 minutes to spare, you can prep your shakes for a week without much fuss. Heres how:

STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR FAVE RECIPE

If youre choosing to make a full week of smoothies, multiply your recipe by 7. Or choose a few if you want variety. If you need fresh protein shake ideas for the new year, weve included four below.

STEP 2: GRAB YOUR BLENDER AND STORAGE CONTAINERS

Any blender will do. We like to use ice cube trays and Ball jars for storage.

    STEP 4: BLEND, POUR, FREEZE

Add all of your ingredients to the blender until smooth. Then pour into your ice cube tray and place in the freezer. One ice cube tray will make 4 servings. If youre making more than one type of smoothie, pour one serving into 4 of the ice cube openings. Cover tray with tin foil and freeze until ready to use. .

    STEP 5: RE-BLEND AND ENJOY

    • 1 serving Life Time Fitness Fiber
    • 1 scoop Life Time Fitness Berry Life Greens
    • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
    • ½ cup mixed berries

After 8 hours, no. If you leave it to defrost over 24, it might. Justin once left one in the fridge for two days. It separated. But, it still tasted fine. Just give it a good shake.

What Youll Need To Prep Smoothies In Advance

    1. Blender.

For years, I used a $40 blender. A few years ago, I received my first high-speed blender, a Blendtec. Then, a couple of years ago, I upgraded to a KitchenAid Pro Blender. If you plan to make a lot of green smoothies, or smoothies containing hard ingredients , a high-speed blender is the way to go. Yes, high-speed blenders can be pricey and require budgeting over months and years. To save money, I highly recommend checking out the Blendtec refurbished site if thats the brand youre looking to purchase.

Note: Dont let the desire or feeling that you need a high-speed blender keep you from prepping smoothies. Any blender will work great for a basic fruit/soft veggie smoothie recipe. My $40 blender lasted 8 years!

    2. Freezer-Safe Jars.

If you have the freezer space and plan to freeze smoothies youre going to need freezer-safe jars. Freezer-safe mason jars are my favorite with the plastic screw-on lids. I can use them for soups, smoothies, broth, salad dressing, and so much more. They are also freezer safe thanks to the thick glass and wide mouth. The plastic lids dont rust so I recommend using them for freezing.

    3. Push-Up Pop or Popsicle Molds.

I like to freeze extra smoothies in push-up pop or popsicle molds. Over the years Ive used both reusable and one-time use molds. Personally, I like the one-time use plastic moldsthey are are much better for traveling or the lunchbox since they dont require washing. Smoothies can also be frozen in popsicle molds.

S For Preparing Smoothies Ahead Of Time

Method 1: the ice cube tray method

This is my personal favorite way to make smoothies ahead of time because you can either choose to enjoy the smoothie right away by blending up the smoothie ice cubes, or you can allow the cubes to thaw to room temperature then simply give the smoothie a shake.

  • Add it to an ice cube tray. Once youve made your smoothie, pour it into an ice cube tray so that each cube space is evenly filled. I like these silicone trays for easy removal.
  • Freeze. Place your ice cube tray in the freezer for a few hours, overnight, or for up to 3 months.
  • Thaw & shake. Once youre ready to drink your smoothie, place the smoothie cubes in a large glass with a lid and transfer it to the refrigerator for about 1 hour. Then, give the glass a shake and your smoothie will be ready to drink!
  • Blend if youd like. You can also transfer the smoothie cubes back to your blender, add extra milk and blend, then enjoy your smoothie right away.
  • Method 2: the mason jar method

  • Add it to a jar. After youve made your smoothie, pour it into a mason jar and close it with a lid.
  • Freeze. Place your mason jar in the fridge for 2-3 hours, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Shake & enjoy. When youre reading to drink it, simply give it a shake if it has been in the refrigerator, or let it thaw for a few hours in the fridge or at room temperature if it has been in the freezer.
  • Method 3: the freezer pack smoothie

  • Freeze. Place the reusable bag into the freezer for up to 3 months.

    How To Freeze Dairy

This is definitely one of the questions I get asked often. Whether you just want to stock up on your favorite dairy product when its on sale or make sure it doesnt go bad when youll be off for a few days, its good to know that you can easily freeze dairy products, and especially greek yogurt.

Frozen milk and cream are best used within 2 months, while cheese can last up to 3 months without losing its taste and consistency.

When freezing greek yogurt, make sure to use them within 2 months. Yogurt may get a little grainy when frozen, but once you whisk it well or incorporate it into your smoothie, you wont be able to taste the difference.

For freezing the greek yogurt for these smoothie packs, I find it helpful to freeze using a simple ice cub tray. Each slot is about 2 tbsp. so I use that as a basis for how much to grab and put into my freezer pack. You could also plop greek yogurt out onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then freeze individually before adding to the smoothie packs if you dont have an ice cube tray.

    What Is A Smoothie Pack

My vegan meal prep for the week 2022, Vegan recipes low budget

Smoothie packs are the ingredients youll need to make 1-2 servings of a smoothie all put together. If youve ever found yourself struggling in the morning with time or motivation to put a smoothie together, then this is a method you must try!

You can batch prep a bunch of smoothie packs, pop them in the freezer and have smoothies for the entire week or even month! It just depends on how many you want to make.

When youre getting started with smoothie packs, I recommend making a max of 5. This will help you get the hang of it first. Make sure to label the flavor on the front of the bag, along with any extra ingredients that are needed. For example, I do not recommen adding the milk until youre ready to blend. All of the recipes below require 1/2 cup milk .

    Add Extras When Blending

If you want to add dry ingredients like chia seeds, protein powder, dried spices, etc. to your smoothies, I find it works best to add when blending rather than to the bags. Unless you like digging stubborn chia seeds out of plastic bags.

But flavor enhancers like fresh herbs and spices can definitely go into the bag before freezing. My favorites: fresh basil, mint, cilantro, parsley, ginger and turmeric.

    What Should You Prep

Meal prep is all about saving you time so you can get past the cooking, stick with mostly healthy options, and on to staying fueled throughout the entire busy week! Here are a few things to try:

Pre-Cut and wash all veggies for all recipes> really if you just do this you are ahead of the game. It saves so much time in so many ways because the ingredients are ready, and you dont have to pull out or clean cutting boards and knives.

Protein options? sometimes I prep meat ahead of time and sometimes I make it early during the week and eat it over and over again

Smoothies planned? make smoothie packs ahead of time

Protein shakes for breakfast? see below

    Oatmeal? make overnight oats

Eggs? make hard boiled eggs, egg muffins or crustless quiches to eat all week

Salads? you can do the mason jar salad thing or what we do is just make all the salads except the dressing, we use disposable cups for dressings

Need grains or sweet potatoes for a recipe? If I dont buy them pre-cooked, then I cook them ahead of time in my meal prep. Usually, I make leftovers and freeze them, so I dont always have to cook these when I need them

On the go breakfasts or snacks? healthy baked or no baked goods to eat, cut and washed fruit, etc

What Makes A Healthy Breakfast Smoothie

    How To Prep A Week

    So this is 2 part:

    1. Make sure you like it! Choose flavors and ingredients you like and opt for a smoothie because you enjoy it, not as a should. Enjoying our food is such an important part of a healthy relationship with food.

    2. Nutritionally, here are some tips for putting together a healthy, balanced meal prep smoothie.

    • Start with fruit and veggies: Aim for ½ -1 cup of fruit to start + a handful of greens if you like!
    • Make sure to include protein: protein helps balance blood sugars and keep us full longer after eating. Some of my favorite smoothie proteins include Greek yogurt, hemp hearts, tofu and even black beans!
    • Dont forget fat! Fat is our satiety factor! Add avocado, hemp hearts, chia seeds, flax or nut or seed butters for extra creaminess and a smoothie that will leave you feeling satisfied
    • Include a complex carbohydrate like oats for an extra boost of fuel! While youll get some carbohydrates from the fruit it may not be enough to sustain you. Oats add a subtle flavor and lots of fiber to help balance blood sugars!

Alright, now that you know all the tips and tricks to master the art of smoothie meal prep, here are 15+ recipes to get you started!

My Template For Unlimited Smoothie Recipe Ideas

Heres a guide to customizing smoothies so you can use just about any kind of leftover fruit and veggies you have at home, but still make a tasty and balanced smoothie. Start with this basic recipe or ratio and you can adjust to your liking:

    • 2 cups of fresh vegetables : spinach, kale, alfalfa sprouts, cauliflower, ginger, carrots, microgreens
    • 1 cup of fruits : pineapple, apple, watermelon, banana, berries, lemon, coconut, cucumber, peach
    • 1-2 tbsp protein: protein powder, chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, nut butter
    • 8-16 fl oz of liquid: water, coconut water, almond milk, oat milk, greek or coconut yogurt
    • Boosters: goji berries, dates, cacao powder

    What Type Of Blender

With thousands of options on the market, how do you decide what kind of blender to buy?

A blender is always worth the investment. Not only will you use it for green smoothies, you will keep it busy with blending soup, making salsa and whipping up other sauces and dressings. But if you plan to make green smoothie recipes frequently, you want a blender that can handle it. Some blenders even have a smoothie setting, a giveaway that this is a perfect blender for your purposes.

    Look for these features:

    • A large container if you plan to use this recipe for meal prep. Green smoothies store for up to four days, so you want at least 48 ounces to blend at one time.
    • A wider bowl shaped bottom is very efficient at combining all the ingredients.
    • A blender that is powerful enough to cut through frozen fruit and tear tough dark greens like kale. Choose one that has a minimum of 600 watts.
    • Consider other things you want in a blender. Are you low on space? Do you need one that is dishwasher safe? All of these options are available!
    • Vitamix is the best blender on the market and what I use it’s definitely worthwhile if you’re going to make smoothies often! The one I have even has a self-cleaning feature!
