Learning how to make a smoothie is actually pretty easy if you follow the steps below.

Step 0: Get a Quality Blender

For this guide, we are assuming that you actually have a blender perhaps that is presumptuous of us. If you dont have confidence in your blender, chances are you should throw it out recycle it, and get yourself a new one! After all, we dont want to be beating our ingredients with dull blades, we want to be finely chopping and mixing precisely! Here are a couple of blenders we highly recommend:

Step 1: Pick a Smoothie Recipe to Make

Determine the smoothie recipe you would like to make based on your purpose. Are you on a diet, looking to lose weight and in need of a meal replacement? Or are you trying to get more greens into your diet, protein after a workout, or simply looking to make a delicious dessert recipe or a tasty snack?

If you dont have a recipe in mind, peruse this site for plenty of healthy options, search the internet, or ask a friend for a good smoothie recipe.

Step 2: Add Your Liquid

The first thing to add into your blender is the liquid, which is usually around 1 to 2 cups. Follow what your smoothie recipe calls for, but keep a few things in mind. The more liquid you add the more watery or runnier your smoothie will be. Some people like it this way. If you prefer a thicker consistency, use slightly less liquid.

  • You can get larger 32oz mason jars too.
  • The Vitamix personal series is great for making just one or two smoothies at a time.
  • So is the Magic Bullet or Nutri Bullet the only hang up here is that I find I have to replace these models once every couple years or so because the motor eventually burns out.
  • The Vitamix Ascent series is my fave though it’s self-cleaning so you aren’t left with a ton of mess and it’s perfect for if you’re prepping 3-4 smoothies at a time. It can tear through anything to make the smoothest smoothie, even ice!

  • If youre using any nuts, seeds, or other extra ingredients, repeat the above with those ingredients.
  • The important thing is that you add just a few ingredients at a time, then blend on a low setting until its all mixed together into a liquid.
  • Some common options that I use are walnuts, chia seeds and ground flax seeds.

If youre new to green smoothies, I recommend starting with baby spinach. It has the mildest flavor of all the leafy greens, which means you wont be able to taste it at all. But if you want to branch out and get some different vitamins and nutrients into your smoothie, you can also try kale , collard greens, or even Swiss chard. In order to prevent the strawberries from sticking together when frozen, you can follow these steps for freezing fresh strawberries:

  • Rinseand dry fresh strawberries. You dont want extra moisture, it will cause them to stick!
  • Prepare the fruit. Remove the stems and if you want, cut into 1-inch pieces for recipes. You can also leave them whole once the stems are taken off.
  • Placefresh strawberries on a wax or parchment paper-lined baking sheet in a single layer. Freeze for at least 3-4 hours or up to overnight.
  • Store strawberries in a gallon-sized ziplock bag. These can be kept in the freezer for up to 6 months.

    You can buy pre-packaged frozen fruit and vegetables in the freezer aisle of your local supermarket if you’re in a pinch, but I prefer to make my own. It’s a great way to reduce food waste and if you buy your favourite ingredients on sale, it works out to be a lot cheaper.

    Tips for freezing your own fruit and vegetables

    • Wash and remove inedible parts
    • Chop into bite-sized chunks.
    • Optional – Flash freeze to prevent your ingredients from freezing in one lump together.
    • Spread the fruit and vegetable chunks onto a baking tray and put it in the freezer for approx. 1 hour.
    • Once chunks are frozen solid, put them in airtight containers or freezer bags
  • Frozen fruit and vegetables will last in the freezer for up to 3 months.

    Ah, the great smoothie debate: to ice or not to ice? This also depends. If want a thicker, chilled smoothie and youre using FROZEN fruit or vegetables, then ice isnt needed. If you want a thicker consistency and a chilled smoothie and youre using FRESH fruits and/or veggies, add a handful of ice before blending the smoothie. Ice not only creates a thicker smoothie, but also chills the ingredients. I dont find room temperature smoothies to be very desirable, so adding some sort of frozen ingredient is my preference.

    An alternative to adding ice is to add yogurt, milk, or kefir to an ice cube tray, freeze the liquid, and then place the ice cubes in a bag or container to use for making smoothies. Youll still need to add a liquid to your smoothies, such as water or milk, but this is a great option if you want to avoid watery ice cubes when using fresh fruits and/or vegetables. Another option is to freeze peeled bananas in advance and use the frozen bananas when making smoothies. This way you can use fresh seasonal fruit, no ice, and a frozen banana to achieve a thick, chilled smoothie.
