How to Make a Fruit Smoothie

Frozen fruit can always be found stocked in our freezer.

When that moment strikes and I have literally NOTHING else to make, a frozen fruit smoothie can always save the day.

It doesnt even matter what fresh or frozen fruits Im working with. They can ALL be turned into a creamy and delicious smoothie.

That is, if you have this basic formula on hand.

I would never leave you hanging, though. In addition to this simple guide, youll also find a few recipes you can start off with and then add in all of the nuts, seeds, milks, juices, yogurts, and protein powders your heart desires.

Because after you finish reading this post, youll never need me again. Well, at least not when it comes to making incredible frozen fruit smoothies!

Fruit Smoothie Recipes And Tips

Before you get started putting a recipe together, here are some tips to help you learn how to make a fruit smoothie.

Use frozen fruit more often than ice. Ice can help thicken your smoothie, but it can also compromise the taste. Consider using frozen fruits more often than you would use ice. Frozen fruits can also blend better than fresh fruits.

Mix your sweeteners into other liquids. If you are using sugar or other sweeteners in your smoothie, blending them into other soft/liquid ingredients can help distribute the sweetener evenly throughout the final product.

Use concentrates. Fruit concentrates can be easily found in stores. They also can brighten up the taste of your smoothie.

Add the liquid first. This strategy can be better for the blades in your blender. It also helps the ingredients blend together quickly.

If you need to save time for workdays, consider preparing a smoothie ahead of time and freezing it in smaller portions. You can fix a smoothie later by putting frozen portions into your blender with a dash of water or milk.

Use bananas that are just ripe. Using overripe bananas is a good choice for banana bread, but using them in smoothies is not always a good idea. The strong flavor of overripe bananas can overpower the taste of other fruits in your smoothie, so dont use them unless the recipe specifically asks for overripe bananas.

The Formula For The ‘best’ Smoothie

Not all smoothies are created equal. Simply tossing a bunch of fruit and juice in a blender may be tasty, but sipping it will load your body up with possibly too much sugar without any other macros to balance it out, and may ultimately leave you feeling sluggish and hungry shortly after you enjoy.

Making a point to include all of the important components of a good-for-you smoothie: protein, fiber, produce, no sugar added liquids, and possibly mix-ins, can help you enjoy your smoothie and feel good knowing that you are fueling your body with what it needs to make it through the day.

Make Sure You Have A Good Blender To Make This Frozen Fruit Smoothie

You want to make sure you have a good blender. I have been thru some cheap ones and they barely last a week. They just cant handle the ice and frozen fruit.

Dont waste your time like I did with these cheaper models, and just get something nice from the get go. It will save you time and money!

I have a Vitamix now and I love it. We have had it for many years and its still working to make smoothies and more! Its paid for itself time and time again with all the money I have saved making smoothies and milkshakes at home.

Now, it is pricey but its truly worth it. You wont have to keep replacing it like with the cheaper blenders. Amazon has several of them on sale right now for a great price.

If you just cant make it work in the budget, I recommend a Waring professional blender. I think it is the next best thing and it will get the job done. Now, it is not as good as the Vitamix but its a close second for a more reasonable price. Amazon has several Waring blenders on sale right now.

  • Put the ingredients in a blender and whir it up!
  • This will make two large smoothies.
  • Unlike baking recipes, for instance, smoothie recipes do not have to use exact measurements. You can adjust according to taste. The only difference in choosing between fresh or frozen fruit is how thick you want it to be. Frozen will make for a more milkshake-thick smoothie, whereas fresh will get thickened up slightly by the ice, but have a more liquidy texture. Or you can combine frozen and fresh fruit.

    Add A Little Nut Butter

If youre wondering how to make your smoothie sweeter, then adding nut butter is a great option. Almond or peanut butter are our absolute favourites but there are lots of different flavour combos now available.

As with protein powder, youll need to check the ingredients list to ensure youre not adding additional sugar too. There are lots of pure butters that dont contain anything except nuts which make tasty smoothie sweeteners. But youll need to check as many of the standard supermarket brands are positively unhealthy so best avoided.

Detox Green Smoothie With Chia Seeds

If you havent tried chia seeds yet, heres a great opportunity. These tiny but mighty seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids that are great for your heart. They also help you stay fuller longer, thanks to its plant protein power. Combined with spinach, unsweetened almond milk, frozen pineapple, and naturally sweet banana, this tasty mixture is the ultimate breakfast treat.

How To Make A Smoothie Bowl

If you like to eat your smoothie with a spoon instead of a straw, put it in a bowl and keep it thick.

The key to any smoothie bowl is a little amount of water, and either avocado or a clean protein powder in there to thicken it up, says Adler. Ice is great, but keep the water or liquid to ¼ cup at most! Youll need a powerful blender to make this happen.

Many people add whole berries or cut fruit on top of their smoothie bowls and then sprinkle them with chia seeds or chopped nuts. Adler recommends her recipe for a Green Smoothie Bowl, a hearty smoothie that can stand-in as a meal.

    What Is A Fruit Smoothie

A fruit smoothie is a drink made from blended fruits with a liquid base of fruit juice, yogurt, milk, ice cream, or other dairy product. Once you blend all your fruity ingredients into a smooth mixture, you have your perfect smoothie.

You can use various fruits to make a fruit smoothie, including bananas, oranges, apples, kiwis, peaches, and more. First, we’ll look at some fruit smoothie recipes that you can try. However, before we dive in, let’s look at the steps to make a basic smoothie.

    How To Make Fruit Smoothies:

  • Add the frozen fruit, yogurt, water and optional sweetener to a blender.
  • Blend until smooth, adding more water 1/8 of a cup at a time to reach desired thickness.
  • Pour into a glass and immediately rinse your blender out .
  • Dont skip cleaning your blender right away A quick rinse as soon as youve poured your smoothie into glasses will save you lots of time later. Fruit and yogurt are notorious for sticking to the sides of your blender and making it difficult to clean.

Veggie Smoothies That Actually Taste Good

Its no surprise that eating more vegetables lowers your risk of chronic disease. Adding veggies into your smoothies is just one more tasty way to increase your overall daily nutrient content. Here are some more smoothie recipes that utilize vegetables, like the fruit and vegetable smoothie recipe below, without compromising on taste:

    • Smoothie to fight bloating
    • Creamy smoothie bowl with cauliflower
    • Sweet potato smoothie

Youd be surprised how easy it is to add vegetables to smoothies. Cauliflower is one of my fav additions, because its creamy, and virtually tasteless. Go for the frozen kind with this ingredient, as that kills the taste. Beets not only add a fun color, but also folate and vitamin C. Carrots are slightly sweet, and pair well with a variety of fruits in smoothies.

I typically buy all 3 of the above veggies fresh, then dice them up and freeze them. That way I can easily scoop them into my next smoothie.

Can I Have Honey In Smoothies

    How to Make Fruit Smoothies

Some people think that honey in smoothies is a healthy alternative to granulated sugar. After all, its a natural product, right? But the evidence on this is pretty mixed so its hard to say one way or another.

Although honey occurs naturally in nature, this doesnt automatically make it a healthy addition to your smoothie. Its pure, unrefined sugar and still causes an immediate spike in your blood sugar.

It doesnt contain fibre like fruit does, so will hit your system pretty fast. Honey also isnt an option for vegans and we know many of our readers follow a plant-based diet.

You can also sweeten a smoothie with maple syrup or agave nectar but we dont recommend adding either. This is because theyre all forms of added sugar and dont provide your body with much nutritional value. It really doesnt need syrups what it needs is the vitamins, minerals, and fibre found in fresh fruit and veg.

Some people put stevia in smoothies to add some extra sweetness. Were not big fans and have found that it can sometimes taste bitter. So, wed suggest that youre better off going with one of our 7 alternative ideas.

Make It Plant Based / Vegan

How to Make a Smoothie at Home?

You can make this banana smoothie plant-based or vegan by doing two swaps:

    • Use vegan yogurt or another ½ banana. Use your favorite brand of plant-based yogurt or try another half banana to get just the right texture.
    • Substitute non-dairy milk for the milk . We like using oat milk or almond milk. Another good option here would be coconut milk, since the flavor pairs well with banana.

    Ingredients For This Strawberry Smoothie

Heres what youll need to make this strawberry smoothie! Alex and I were careful to choose healthy ingredients for this smoothie: no overly sugary juices or syrups. Heres what we selected:

    • Frozen strawberries: Its easy to find and store frozen berries, and they add a great icy texture to this smoothie. If you want to use fresh berries, use a frozen banana.
    • Fresh banana: Our pet peeve is smoothie recipes that call for frozen bananas, because we never keep them on hand! Usually we want a smoothie recipe now. So we customized this one to use a fresh banana.
    • Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt gives this recipe a protein boost and helpful probiotics. It also makes for a perfect creamy texture.
    • Ice: Heres the most important part ice is essential to a perfect strawberry smoothie! It makes just the right frothy texture. Weve tried it without and it really makes a difference. Do not omit it!
    • Milk: You need just the right amount of liquid in a smoothie to get it to blend. Not enough and the blender gets stuck , and too much it tastes milky. You can also use non-dairy .
    • Maple syrup: Adding a hint of maple brings out the sweetness in the berries. If you eat a low sugar diet you could omit, but it doesnt quite taste sweet enough with no sweetener.

What Kind Of Blender Do I Need

This is one smoothie that you want to get really smooth. Nobody wants to sip on chunks of spinach or kale! So for a stellar green smoothie with a creamy texture, we recommend working with a high-powered blender. We recommend one of these:

    • BUDGET: Ninja Professional BlenderIt rings in at less than $100, and is a powerful blender that can make smooth and creamy green smoothies. We used this one for years and loved it!
    • SPLURGE: Vitamix Professional BlenderThis is the top-of-the-line choice, and the one we use in the Wholefully test kitchen. If you plan to make lots of smoothies and other blended recipes, you may want to consider a Vitamix if it is in your budget.
