Red Dragon Fruit Smoothie
Isnt this Red Dragon Fruit Smoothie gorgeous? This completely plant-based smoothie gets that pretty fuchsia shade from red dragon fruit. If youve ever seen a dragon fruit in the supermarket and wondered what to do with it, this is one of my favorite ideas. Just scoop that beautiful, delicately sweet fruit out of its exotic, dragon-like skin, dump it into a blender, and whizz it all up to make a delicious, colorful, nutrient-rich smoothie. The most common type of dragon fruit is white-fleshed with dark black seeds . However, I was lucky enough to find red dragon fruit, which has deep, pink-red flesh with black seeds. The taste is similar, but the color of your smoothie will vary depending on the variety of fruit you use.
Its really cool, because dragon fruit is grown locally in my home state of California, and I have one growing in my garden right now. So, while it may seem exotic, you can find it locally in many parts of the U.S. In fact, dragon fruit originates in the Americas and is an indigenous food here in warmer parts of the hemisphere, but now grows in many other warm climates around the world. Dragon fruit actually grows on a fruit-bearing cactus! Rich in fiber, vitamin C, essential fatty acids , and antioxidant compounds, this fruit is a great addition to a healthful plant-based diet.

Just slice off the tip of the dragon fruit at its base, or slice off the bottom of he fruit, and peel off the skin, which should come away easily.
Then slice and dice the flesh, transfer it to an air-tight container, and freeze it overnight. If you have a super cold freezer you might find that it freezes a lot faster of course.
Transfer the frozen dragon fruit pieces, creamy Greek style yoghurt and cold full cream milk to a blender or juicer, along with an optional teaspoon of sugar, and blend for a couple of minutes until smooth, thick and creamy.
The teaspoon of sugar is optional as you may find that your red dragon fruit is sweet enough for you. For a really creamy texture, Greek style yoghurt and cold full cream milk are essential. Pour into chilled glasses and garnish with fresh mint and enjoy!

Fresh Vs Frozen Fruits
The major difference between smoothies made with fresh and frozen fruits are the consistency. If you like super thick smoothie, use frozen fruits if you like a thinner and liquidy smoothie, use fresh fruits.
If you cannot find the fresh dragon fruit with red flesh, you can buy frozen dragon fruit pitaya packs at health food stores or Whole Foods next to acai packets. If you dont care about the color, you can always use the white-fleshed varieties.
For the bananas, I recommend using frozen bananas so that you dont need to add ice to your smoothie. They make your smoothie thick and creamy!

Dragon Fruit Smoothie Variations
Creating new smoothie recipes is fantastically fun and also inspires us with even more delightful ideas. Its hard not to share a slew of suggestions on how to slightly change up a smoothie into something even more special. Weve managed to narrow it down to three of our favorites:
- Valentines Day Smoothie Bowl Use only ½ cup of vegan milk for the recipe and spoon the resulting smoothie into a heart-shaped bowl. Top with heart-shaped pieces of fresh dragonfruit and banana and sprinkle in a few fresh, dark, sweet cherries. Add a couple of decadent, vegan Valentines Day chocolates on the side for a very special touch for a loved one
- Renegade Red Velvet Variation Follow the directions as above, but also add in 1-2 tablespoons of cacao or cocoa powder to the smoothie recipe. Before serving your smoothie, drizzle the inside surface of the glasses with rich, melted vegan chocolate. Garnish with cherries and chunks of dairy-free chocolate chips. A truly decadent dessert!
- Much Ado About Mango Create a more tropical, breezy blend that is banana-free by swapping the same amount of mango for banana in this recipe. Adorn your glass with additional mango slices and consider substituting mango juice instead of plant milk for the liquid. Yum!

How Do I Store My Leftover Smoothie
Good question! Pour any leftover smoothie into a covered glass mason jar or insulated water bottle and refrigerate until later. If your smoothie has gotten too liquified, you can add some ice or more frozen fruit and give it a quick blend. Another fun tip for saving a smoothie for a longer period of time is to freeze it in an ice cube tray . If you pour the mixture directly into the trays and freeze it overnight , all you need to do it throw the cubes into the blender and blend away! It helps to leave the cubes out at room temperature for about 5-10 minutes before blending. Adding a splash of plant milk or water will assist the process, too.

What Is In This Dragon Fruit Smoothie
For this recipe, I used:
- pink dragon fruit
Here I used the pink dragon fruit variety. The fruit has a mild floral taste and is much sweeter than the white variety. Ive found the white dragon fruit is bland and isnt as sweet.
The mango I used here is a ripe Julie mango. It is my favorite type of mango and is extremely sweet. But, you can use your preferred mango variety here.
There are lots of other flavors you can pair with dragon fruit to make smoothies. Fruits like pineapple, watermelon, pawpaw and berries are all great choices.
By the way, I used some of these fruits in my dragon fruit tropical salad. You have to try it too, its so good!
