The Best Blender For The Job

Ive owned a lot of blenders, but my high-speed Vitamix blender is definitely the best one Ive owned. This appliance will blend even the toughest of ingredients into pulp. I prefer using my blender to my food processor for sauces or homemade hummus, as its much easier to clean out the Vitamix. This is definitely one kitchen appliance we use on a daily basis, if not twice a day!

How To Make A Smoothie Without Milk

It might surprise you when I say that more often than not, I make my smoothies without milk.

Sure, sometimes I make fruit based smoothies with milk and yogurt, but oftentimes I do not use milk at all in my smoothies, and sometimes no liquid either!

This guide will help you find out which flavors work best in a smoothie so that you can make delicious smoothies without milk at home!

Culinary Tips For The Best Dairy

Fruit Smoothie WITHOUT MILK

If you want to make smoothies for breakfast and arein a time crunch, place all of the non-frozen ingredients in your blenders jar and place it in the fridge the night before. Add the frozen ingredients in the morning and blend!

Key Ingredients And Substitutions

Frozen strawberries make your smoothie thick and ice-cold. No need to add ice cubes that will water down. You can use part fresh strawberries if needed.

Water helps the blending process. You can replace it with plant-based milk if you prefer.

Cashew butter makes the smoothie super creamy and has a relatively neutral taste that youll barely notice.

Strawberry jam is totally optional but beautifully enhances the strawberry flavor of the smoothie. It makes it taste so good without the added flavoring agents that you can find in store-bought smoothies. If you dont want to use jam but would like to lightly sweeten your smoothie, you can replace it with pure maple syrup.

Add More Protein To A Coconut Milk Smoothie

As we noted above: we use Greek yogurt in smoothies to make a creamy base and load up on protein. But if youre making a dairy free smoothie, where to get the protein? Here are some great ideas:

  • Chia seeds. Add plant-based protein and fiber with chia seeds! A quantity of 2 tablespoons chia seeds adds 4 grams protein and 11 grams fiber .
  • Nut butter . A quantity of 1 tablespoon nut butter adds 4 grams protein. Almond or cashew butter has a more neutral flavor than peanut butter.

More Dairy Free Smoothie Liquids

While the above liquids are more popular, I like to get creative with my liquid bases. Here are a few more super fun + delicious options:

Kombucha– I’m not kidding! This is a great probiotic option, and the sky’s the limit on flavors.

Fresh squeezed juice– While 100% juice has natural sugar, it is still a higher sugar option. So remember that when adding it to your smoothie.

Coffee– This base works great in smoothies including cocoa or cacao, nut butter, vanilla, you name it. Need a caffeine free option? Just use strongly brewed decaf coffee to enjoy the flavor without the buzz.

As you can see, dairy milk is far from the only liquid base for smoothies. Don’t be afraid to get creative mix + match any of these bases until you find your fav.

Ingredient Substitutions And Cooking Tips

You have a few options when it comes to a dairy-free milk. Soy milk is a bit higher in calories, but also boasts more protein and B vitamins. Almond milk, on the other hand, is higher in vitamin D and calcium.

Hemp milk is not traditionally a favorite however, many vegetarians are familiar with this option. Hemp milk has a creamier texture, which often works well in a smoothie. Hemp milk may be rich in the omega-3 fatty acids, but it is important to use one that is fortified with calcium and vitamins to get the most nutritious kind.

You will notice that this recipe doesnt include any icethats because the trick to a satisfying dairy-free smoothie is to ditch the ice and use frozen fruit instead. This delivers maximum flavor and helps keep the smoothie from becoming watery. A mix of fresh and frozen fruit works fine depending on what you have on hand. For best results, at least half of the fruit should be the frozen.

When you have bananas that are becoming overripe, simply peel them and put them in a zippered plastic bag in your freezer. They will be perfect to toss into your smoothie at a moments notice. Dont worry if they turn somewhat browntheir flavor wont be affected. The frozen banana will add a creamy texture to the smoothie.

If you like your smoothie on the sweeter side you can add ingredients like maple syrup, agave, honey, or even non-calorie sweeteners if you want to keep the calories in check.

Many people like adding greek yogurt to their smoothies, to make them extra creamy. We purposely made this strawberry pineapple smoothie without yogurt.

Another way is making the creamiest smoothie using frozen fruit, banana, or full-fat coconut milk.

Other options include using vegan ice cream, which will give in return a smoothie more similar to a milkshake.

Do You Need Milk To Make A Smoothie

Dairy Free Healthy Raspberry Banana Smoothie

The answer is no!

You absolutely do not need milk to make a smoothie.

In fact, some of the most delicious smoothies I have ever made do not have any milk in them at all.

Sometimes milk is a great way to help build your smoothies, but it also can easily water down the flavor depending on the type of smoothie you are making.

Green smoothies especially should never be made with milk in them.

I discovered a long time ago that the very best green smoothie I have ever tastedis made with water, citrus fruits, and ice.

Some green smoothies may taste good with milk, but I prefer the ones without it much better.

You have to learn which flavors play well together and which ones clash.

Otherwise you might find yourself hating smoothies and giving up on them all together.

That was me for awhile and I had just about given up making smoothies taste good.

Now that I know how to make delicious smoothies at home, I make them all of the time!

Why I Enjoy Dairy Free Smoothies

After having food sensitivity testing done, I discovered that I have to avoid several things including gluten, candida and casein. Casein is a protein found in milk from mammals. That means no more milk or dairy based yogurt in my smoothies.

My test results came with a list of foods that cause inflammation in my body. I personally do not have any severe reactions to anything and I am very grateful for that. But there are several things that cause inflammation for me, so that has played a major role in the food choices I make.

Ive always loved smoothies, but I only made them once in a while. Now I make these dairy free smoothies every day!

My nutritionist suggested that I try So Delicious Dairy Free products, including their coconut milk yogurt because there are no added sugars, unlike other dairy-free yogurts. So Delicious Dairy Free products are not only dairy free, they are certified vegan, meaning everything is plant based, including their packaging!

Look, Ive never really been a big yogurt fan, and have never been able to embrace the tangy flavor of Greek yogurt. But I love this coconut milk yogurt and I use it quite often in my smoothies. In fact, the plain version has a natural sweetness from the coconut that makes it delicious without added extracts or flavors! Pairing this yogurt with So Delicious Dairy Free Organic Almondmilk is an absolute no-brainer!

What Are The Best Fruits For Smoothies

  • Mango and banana – don’t forget to take out the big mango pit!
  • Mango and peach with or without the maple syrup.
  • Pineapple and banana is a delicious combo and it gives a real zing to your taste buds.
  • Raspberries and cherries are spectacular together.
  • Kiwi and Pineapple will wake you up and they make great POPSICLEStoo!
  • Watermelon and peach make a great duo.
  • Oranges and sweet ruby grapefruit is really refreshing.

These are only a few fruit smoothie combos that are out there. You can always add a banana to anything and every single berry works great too.

Here is another great dairy-free fruit smoothie! This one, the Workout Blueberry Protein Shake, is packed with protein!

Notice that vegetables weren’t even mentioned in this post. A handful of spinach or kale would take you a long way too. But that’s a whole other story.

The Best Toppings For An Acai Smoothie

The fun part about an acai smoothie is the toppings! Because toppings are such an integral component of an acai bowl, you absolutely cant go without them here. We eat with our eyes, and the rainbow effect of the toppings really works. Here are our favorite ways to top this smoothie:

  • Almond butter: This is absolutely essential! The texture of almond butter in the smoothie almost reminds me of hot fudge in a sundae. Yep, its that good! Plus, it adds plant-based protein which makes the smoothie more filling.
  • Fresh strawberries and blueberries: Bring in bright colors with these tangy sweet berries.
  • Mango: Add a few mango chunks for color and sweetness: you can even thaw a few frozen ones under warm water.
  • Coconut flakes: Coconut flakes add a nice crunch and tropical flavor.
